Hi all, i'd love to keep a couple of chickens but we had some when I was a kid and they were so noisy. They used to sqwuak loudly from about 5am. Does anyone know if there is a quiet breed or is that wishful thinking!!
Thanks

perhaps you could sellotape their beaks closed

Frozen ones are generally quite quiet.

Ours are pretty quiet except when they've laid an egg! Avoid White Stars as they can be VERY noisy! We have hybrid brown chickens (Bovan Goldline), a Black Rock and a Speckeldy, and they're really not noisy at all.

Obviously you need to avoid cockerels...

Just asked partner if i could have an eglu, got a no way and that's even before he knows how expensive they are! I used to love my chickens, the eldest was with us for 10 years and had such personality! Will work on him and welcome anymore suggestions of breeds!!

I love to find a quiet breed too!

They cluck when they lay eggs and first thing in the morning. We went through a stage (when we used to have hens),of not putting up the pop hole at night after they had put themselves to bed.The sun got up ,and so did they! Boy they were noisy.
Keeping them in the dark, until you let them out, keeps them quiet.
