What is in a dud egg?

I stayed on a farm last week on holiday and may have added a dud egg to the eggs we took home (Don't ask how I put it in but either myself or my mother in law has got the dud egg in our egg boxes.) This is an egg that has been sat on for two-three weeks but not hatched)
So if I crack it open wil their be a partly formed dead chick inside or will it be yolk and the white?
Still wondering whether to mention this to the MIL or keep quiet and see what happens..

Depends if it was fertile or not. It could be a dead chick, or it could be a lot of horrible gas!!!

You can check by floating the eggs in a jug of water - if any part of the egg touches the bottom of the jug it is fine, if it floats then it is the dud!

Yes I will try the water test. Lovely eggs though much nicer than those in the supermarket.
Still won't say anything to the MIL though

bleugh, you've just brought back horrible memories of cracking eggs and finding chicks when I was a kid! Put me off for years! NOw have hens but NO cockerel so this can't happen!
