Treadle Feeders

Has anyone used them, and if so, with what breeds?

I have an interest in this too, since half the pellets I put out in normal feeder are being scoffed by wild birds. I now have high chicken food bills and a garden stuffed with exceedingly plump wild birds. I was thinking a treadle feeder might be the answer but they do seem exceedingly expensive, and am a bit worried my chickens might be a bit too...well stupid... to work out how to use it!

~I'm looking at them as I know the area my chicken house is will attract rats, and I have no desire to encourage them. I'm just worried the treadles won't work with bantams, and silkies.
