Got hens again last wkend, heven't had any for a few years. They are lovely! Anyway, what i wanted to know is when do point of lays start laying? Some have got their combs, some are just getting them.

mine were only 15weeks when I got them and started laying at about 21/22 weeks. Are yours "squatting" yet? That was the most reliable sign in mine. One started laying with weeny pink comb, and one had magnificent red comb and didn't lay for a few weeks...

good luck!

Only when the cat is stalking them! Have lost 1 already - no sign of feathers, fox proof run. Guess we didn't clip her wing short enough and she managed to fly out. Think these were about 16 wks so i guess another month then.

from 20 weeks i think

It depends on the breed, some are later than others. Things to look for are the comb and wattles reddening, squatting when you hold your hand over them, and going in and out of the nest box lots! The first egg is SO exciting!

aefondkiss · 13/04/2008 21:38

I hope you get a first egg soon!

no advice, I don't have enough experience.

I hope no more chooks disapear.

point of lay is 20 - 21 weeks.
one of my dogs ate one of my new (well 3 week old) chicks today. I'm SO cross.

THat makes the tally for her 1 rabbit, 2 guinea pigs, 2 full sized hens and one chick. Tally for domesticated animals obviously - not including all the wild rabbits, squirrels and random pigeons.

She is a Beast

oh no! Is that your poodle?

We thought we had lost 2 of ours but they were just hiding VERY well in the bushes!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 13/04/2008 22:42

Our Great Dane and the cock were both vying for the title of 'Lord Protector' yesterday when we let the chickens out to free-range. Poor hens hardly had the chance to get scratching before one or the other of them herded them along!

one of my poodles is a small animal killer
the other one just watches with a holier than thou expression on her face
