How exciting, got the chooks on Thursday and this morning for some reason I decided to look in the nest box and there was a very small egg

I had been told that they wouldn't lay for at least 3 to 4 weeks as they are about 17 weeks old, I was obviously born to be a chicken owner.

The snow obviously doesn't bother them too much

Yay!! What are you going to do with it?

Sparkler · 06/04/2008 10:48

Ah congratulations on your new arrival.

ButterflyBessie · 06/04/2008 10:54

We will probably hard boil it and each have a nibble (family of 6)

I feel so proud of them

hope you took a piture first!

Congratulations! May it be the first of many!

I had a speckledy hen that laid an egg in the cardboard box I bought her home from the poultry farm in. I adored the clever creature! Unfortunately so did the fox.

aw that is good news about your first egg!

duchess your poor hen, have you got new hens now?

DuchessOfNorksSnowSpecial · 06/04/2008 20:31

aefondkiss - we lost lots and lots of hens last year to foxes. We have another flock now but they're penned in (see my chickens in the snow mud on my temporary profile)!

aefondkiss · 06/04/2008 21:22

wow that is a fair bit of snow!

we are in the far NE of Scotland and we had loads of blizzards but no snow lay, such a contrast to the warmth of last week!

that looks like a safe place for your chooks - I hope it out foxes the fox.
