How long do your chickens tolerate being left?

We're off tomorrow on holiday, and have got a neighbour to come in to do the chickens each day. Ours don't like being left more than 1 day, as they kick the food over (I have stupid chickens though) - are yours able to be left longer than that? And do you do anything special with the food?

Our hen house is on legs and I have screwed a hook into the bottom of the underneath of the henhouse and the hopper is hooked on that.

As you may remember, our chickens are in a converted outdoor loo so we hang the hopper from the door handle so the food stays dry and doesn't get knocked over or full of poo. The water is fine for 3 or 4 days - they have big plastic drinker indoors and a trough outside.

I've just looked at your profile to see if you could do similar arrangements with your henhouse but the photos gone! But if you have a neighbour coming in each day then I guess they can top-up the feed/water as necessary?

At least your hens are fox-proof so you don't need to shut-in religiously.

Ours are very stupid with their feed though - they seem to empty it in a day. I must try and work out how to improve their arrangement, and get a bigger water drinker for holidays!

We've got a grain automatic feeder (works by gravity) and it stands on a tripod and is weatherproof.
But it has to be kept well filled otherwise the gravity trip does not work and i end up having to poke it with a stick.
Max we have left our chickens is 4 days with no-one coming in.
They have a 7 foot high fence around their run also.
