My two dozen Sasso eggs have arrived, all intact and well packaged. Need to let them sit for 24 hours and get the incy up and running.

Yay!!!!!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 02/04/2008 13:53

Showing off again?!!

Glad the eggs have finally arrived. Is your broody still sitting?

Curious - did the eggs come by courier and how are they packaged? I've never had eggs delivered (well, other than from Ocado!).

MehgaLegs · 02/04/2008 14:18

Broody still sitting. If she'll let me I'll candle her eggs on Fri.

The Smart Chick eggs came Royal Mail Standard delivery in thick polystyrene boxes with 6 egg shaped dome. They were quite tightly packed but all intact.

Does the thick polystyrene protect the temperature as well d'you think? Because I wouldn't trust Royal Mail not to stack the parcels next to a radiator!

I shouldn't be this excited about everyone's hatching progress!

MehgaLegs · 02/04/2008 16:37

Oooh hadn't though of that. It's very thick so good insulation so hope they have been kept at a fairly constant temp.

Typically today has been nonstop - pigs have been despatched and some friends have just been to collect half of one. I am now off to help at the junior disco. i want to sort my eggs out.!

Candeled today. None of the 6 from my own hens were fertile, proving that the old rooster was almost certainly infertile and so DH was right to replace him.

7 of the Sassos were also infertile. I cracked them all open in the garden and they were definately just yolks, no sign of a chick.

The remaining 17 all look good, can see large blobs and blood vessels. Don't like to candle too long as it gets too hot. Need to get myself a cool lume.

10 days to go.

So is lulu is sitting on infertile eggs? Do you have a new cockerel and if so is he of age?! Still, a possible 17 Sassos is good news.

I finally put my new coop together this evening - in time to get my two chosen victims out of the main henhouse and into their new accommodation.

I shall start collecting eggs for possible hatching from tomorrow, give the girls a couple of days to settle and then give them the china eggs to sit on.

It's quite nerve-wracking this year, new flock and new cockerel and whereby broodies have previously stayed in the big brick henhouse and nested in one of the more secluded boxes, I can't do that this year because new cock is an interfering young idiot who won't leave them alone!

MehgaLegs · 15/04/2008 11:14

No Lulu is sitting on Dorking eggs we bought locally. I keep going out for a peep but nothing yet although she is very low and tight.

We have two new roosters. Both light Sussex and rather magnificant. One is extremely virile and there is a lot of chicken lurving going on at the end of the garden.

Good luck with brooding up your broodies.

Dorkings are big aren't they so may take another day or two?

Our cock hasn't stopped crowing since I let him out this morning - I think he wants his girls back! Situation not being helped by a pheasant screeching back at him from the paddock behind the henhouse. The would-be broodies - a Light Sussex & a Silver Sussex - are rather edgy in their new home. I wish I had more patience!

ska · 15/04/2008 16:14

we have 6 call duck eggs in our incubator dd has a chart and ticks off the days til they will be 'born' - stressful tho checking the temp everyday

MehgaLegs · 15/04/2008 17:09

Oh ducklings ska - they will be cute. We haven't got room for ducks although the bit of land we rent next door for the pigs is empty at the moment and it has a pond.

Hadn't thought of that DoN. Still no sound. DH reckons it'll be Thurs.

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 17/04/2008 14:34

Well, it's Thursday? Any chicks in the offing?

I've put a dozen eggs in the cellar to store for broody(s) and will put the china eggs in nest later this afternoon. I'll be inconsolable if neither of them sits!

MehgaLegs · 17/04/2008 14:38

No . Nothing is happening. It's still too quiet. Poor Lulu. Have moaned about her dirty eggs on the broody lulu thread.

It is so frustrating.

Our old broody Patty hatched all her eggs, several times over with no probs. Not sure why Lulu can't.
