have three chickens:

grey one "Bucket" - no sign of impending egg activity.

white one "Mrs Moo" - wattle and comb growing and getting properly red.

red one "Chicken Little" - squats whenever you go near her.

They must be about 20ish weeks now....what do you reckon? Can't wait, but am getting little despondent with daily disappointment...

The squatting is a good sign that they are about to come into lay. Also watch for them going in and out of the nest box a lot! What breeds are they?

dilbertina · 26/03/2008 15:26

ooh I do hope so!

They are all hybrids (£10 each - bargain)

white = light sussex
red = blacktail
grey = bluebelle/bluehaze thingy

Chicken farm a bit vague as to exact parentage - rhode island and "other stuff".

Are all very pretty and friendly though so am not too bothered. Will be interesting what colour eggs I get. The grey ones should have a "plum" blush. The white one has white ear lobes so maybe hers will be lighter.

lovely!

this made me think of when I found the first egg, one of our hens started laying just by our door step(they were very free range then lol), it was great that she was so considerate!

dilbertina · 27/03/2008 09:05

lol dilbertina

you never stop being really happy about the eggs, even when you are drowning in eggs, they are just fab.

wow at the first being a double yolker!

TheDuchessOfNorksBride · 29/03/2008 20:36

dilbertina - are you Sussex/Kent? Did you go to Mumbles Farm in Borough Green?

The light sussex will give you eggs the colour of very, very milky tea.

You may get double yokes for a couple of months btw - we once had a couple of hens that laid them until they were around a year old. I rather liked them!

dilbertina · 02/04/2008 15:00

sorry, only just noticed this.... Duchess we're on east/west sussex border. Got the chickens from Martinswood Chickens.

No more double yolkers yet but she has laid pretty much every day since she started!

We got a soft-shelled egg yesterday but I suspect that might be the white ones first effort (she's been squatting for a couple of days)...will try to make the grit look more tempting!
