What size run?

Hi everyone!

We’re finally moving to a house with a big enough garden to consider keeping chickens. We both work from home, so ideally they’d free range the garden most afternoons. We’d like to just have 2-3 birds I think. What size coop and run would you think is a good size for them?

Is there anything else to consider with them free roaming the garden during the day? It would only be when we’re home, and the garden isn’t particularly large (small and suburban enough that predators like foxes wouldn’t be an issue during the day whilst we’re home). We also don’t grow any plants in our garden as we have an allotment, so don’t need to worry about those being dug up 😁

Anything else I need to consider?

If your chickens can be out of the coop, either free-ranging or in a chicken run for most of the day, the coop size recommendation is two to four square feet of space per chicken. If your flock needs to confined regularly for longer periods of time, the recommendation is seven to eight square feet of space per bird.13 Jan 2022
