Newbie night enclosure questions..

Prepping for our new arrivals! Previous owner had chickens and turkeys in a large enclosure with high netting and post all round. There are two chicken sheds, will be using one. Its 110cm deep by 170wide and has a perch running all along it. See pics! My questions are, can I fit 4 hens in here comfortably at night time, and I'll need nesting boxes to go in there won't I? Was thinking two..like this? www.etsy.com/uk/listing/995561983/wooden-chicken-nesting-boxes-various?gpla=1&gao=1&utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=shopping_uk_en_gb_b-home_and_living-outdoor_and_garden-feeders_and_birdhouses-birdhouses&utm_custom1=k_CjwKCAiAprGRBhBgEiwANJEY7MdXzUxiYIt9tAUxGbvhF2lQW3_TeyiXUouDqp_blQUK3SD8S25IjxoC2qEQAvD_BwE_k&utm_content=go_12603859128_118453534223_508759603439_aud-966475067653%3Apla-307319691321_m__995561983engb_503548398&utm_custom2=12603859128&gclid=CjwKCAiAprGRBhBgEiwANJEY7MdXzUxiYIt9tAUxGbvhF2lQW3_TeyiXUouDqp_blQUK3SD8S25IjxoC2qEQAvD_BwE&variation0=1917576940
Or will it take up too much room? Thanks for any advice!

That's l plenty big enough for 4 hens, I have mine in a smaller coop than that and it's cosy warm in winter.
I wouldn't be keen on the square perch though as it's not good for their feet to grip a square perch for hours at night. I went and found a branch of suitable diameter and put that in mine.

The nest boxes look great. The hens usually like them to be off the ground though I have a few strange ones that don't. So you could provide either and see what they prefer. 😊

It looks fine. The main thing to consider at night, rather than floor space, is ventilation and airflow, which you have plenty of with a higher shed.
If I were you I would lime treat the shed and ground a month before the new birds arrive.

FindMeInTheSunshine · 23/03/2022 07:16

That is plenty large enough for four hens. They will probably all try to sleep in the same few square centimetres!

I'd also check if the chicken wire fence goes into the ground, or out as a "skirt", to stop foxes digging underneath. Enjoy your hens!

I think the size is more than big enough.
And the perch looks fine www.thehappychickencoop.com/chicken-roost/

You are aware of the current avian flu restrictions and the requirement to keep hens housed and under cover?

Laying box looks cute.

We made our own from some scrap wood and it is outside the house, but inside the covered enclosure.

My girls would love this.. Looks great and really secure. I’d get two nesting boxes. Don’t pay any attention to pp saying about restrictions. I don’t know anyone who is taking any notice of it. Let the birds enjoy their freedom!

teaspig · 30/03/2022 13:51

Wtf @Discodanny everyone I know is keeping their birds in - probably because they don't want to lose them, there have been cases here and flocks culled because of it. Councils are also fining after inspections.
You are being very irresponsible AngryAngryAngry and frankly shouldn't be allowed to keep pets if you can't look after them

Discodanny · 30/03/2022 14:00

Totally unenforceable and quite frankly you are more likely to lose a hen through the stress of being cooped up.

teaspig · 30/03/2022 14:13

Only if your enclosed area is too small 🤦🏼‍♀️

Discodanny · 30/03/2022 14:19

Abit like the majority of chicken coops then. Not designed for be used as a prison 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

teaspig · 30/03/2022 15:49

So you build an extension ffs it's not difficult 🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️🤦🏼‍♀️

if you don't have the means to look after pets you shouldn't have them. Ours have always had a massive enclosed area. It's now completely covered as per the law as I dont want to contribute to the current problem, it's called being responsible Biscuit
