Sick hen advice needed

Morning,

I’m hoping someone with experience can help me with my hen.

I was gifted her by a neighbour a few months ago, no idea how old she is. She’s never laid though, I assumed she was just older, maybe ex bat that wasn’t up for laying anymore.

I think over the last 6 weeks we’ve seen a really gradual decline, tail a bit droopy, sleeping more, comb has gone pale and floppy. But she still eats and drinks normally and has a nice wonder with the other girls so I’ve not contacted a vet.

I’ve wormed her, given her a vitamin supplement, a bath etc. She now likes to sleep in a spare hutch we have in the run away from the other hens.

Yesterday though she became much sleepier. Still eating and drinking and pooing as normal. No crop issues I can feel. Did free range a bit but more obviously sedate and has a sad comb. For the first time ever I had to put her to bed, and she doesn’t want to come out her home this morning. I’ve put some pellets and water in her hutch with her.

What can be wrong with her? I’ve felt her abdomen and no hard lumps so pretty sure she’s not egg bound, no crop issues, no red mite. Is she just really old do you think and winding down?

She hasn’t really been sick enough for a vet I would think, as she still eats etc and free ranges ok. Most other things you see on internet cause a rapid decline which we just haven’t got here.

Any advice?

Tia x

It does sound like she’s just old & fading, as you say you don’t know how old. You sound to have done all the usual checks & found nothing obvious. I think you’re doing right by her, keeping her comfy.
