When will they start laying?

We have just adopted 3 18 week old chickens. They are absolutely gorgeous. Can anyone tell me when they are likely to start laying? Will it take them a while to settle in? We’ve had them 2 days. Also I read that we shouldn’t let them roam around the garden for a week, that we should keep them in their small pen (igloo), for now, does everyone do that?

It depends on the breed and weight. You can check their combs - they need to be nice and red to lay. Also try putting gentle downwards pressure on the hen's back - if they are ready to lay they will squat. Could be a couple of weeks or more. I would also keep them in for a week so they know 'home' and get to know you a bit. Try and give them treats by hand so you can call them to you. It helps when you want them to go in!

Thanks. We have been trying to feed them by hand, one will do it, not the other two so far.
