Concerned about my neighbours chickens.

Hi.
I’ve not ever kept chickens before but I did grow up in the country where a lot of my friends always had chicken scratching around in the yard.
My neighbour has started to keep chickens. He has about 12 including two cockerels. They spend all day in a coop that is about 12ft by 6ft. I’ve never seen them out in the garden at all, even though it is well fenced.

I’m quite happy to be told that this is fine and normal but it seems like a lot of chickens in a small space to me.

Thanks in advance.

To keep a cockerell you need permission from the local council. Maybe give them a ring and they will send someone round.

Oh do you? It’s a noisy bastard.

Do you live in a high risk area for avian influenza?
In which case chickens have to be kept separate from wild birds. But it does seem a bit small for that many birds.

Not that I know of.

My primary concern is the welfare of the birds. I wouldn’t be so bothered if they were allowed out during the day.

I may be wrong but I thought the suggested hen to cockerel ration was 12:1. They definitely shouldn’t have two with that number of hens in such an enclosed space

SoupDragon · 10/02/2019 14:15

Google implies 3-4sq ft per chicken.

ChesterGreySideboard · 10/02/2019 14:27

I only think there are two as I can hear two different crows.
