Larger coops

Can anyone recommend a good XL coop?
I just need the actual coop, no run or anything. I would like at least 4sq ft of space per hen, loads of manufacturers recommended capacity is just cruel. I was thinking of upping my flock to about 10 hens, so 40sq ft of floor space or above.

Keep an eye out for people wanting to get rid of old sheds. I recently got a free shed from FB (we had to dismantle, take home and remantle which was a bit of a job), but it's great for some of our chickens. We put up two perches, one front to back and one side to side and added some nesting boxes. They are locked in it at night and have access for laying. Rest of the time our chooks are free range.

I'm now looking for another freebie as want to up my chicken population.

Thanks for the tip!

They are addictive, aren't they? What have you got? We have 5 ex-battery/rescue hens and a rooster. I'd like more space so I can fit 12 comfortably.

I have 17 ex-bats, some we have had for 18 months, 12 months and a few days. I also have a white maran who is a busy body and has something to say about everything ! She was broody earlier in the year and managed to hatch one out of 6 Ixworth eggs. The chick is now about 12 weeks old and HUGE!

They are all such characters and follow us round, always want to know what is going on!

I am a bit of a chicken nerd Grin

Sounds amazing! How many eggs are you getting a day? We were getting 3 but the last 2 days there's only been 2.

I was thinking maybe an 8x6 shed. What size is your girls coop.

In the enclosed original chicken run (which was once a polytunnel) we have a coop is about 4ft x 3ft and 6 of the new girls sleep in it at night, we also have a smaller coop that has a nesting box that one of the new girls sleeps in and a large plastic cat carrier that the 8th new chicken sleeps in! They seem to have sorted themselves out re sleeping and after four days had worked out that they had to go inside at night to roost!

We also have a 5ft x 8ft shed that the original 11 girls sleep in. They have free range in the paddocks, and the new girls will also have free range once they are settled and in better condition.

We are getting about 14 eggs a day at the moment. Nine from the original girls and 5 from the new girls.

I think that size sounds fine just need to have enough nesting boxes for them.

They sound like they have a lovely home! I just ordered my 8x6 shed. Very excited about it Grin
