Stray chickens - what to do with them ?

Posted this in chat but someone suggested I posted this here as well:

There's 2 stray chickens in garden since yesterday.

I don't know anything about chooks so need some help fast !

They've apparently been turfed out by the neighbour who's got bored of them.

Look quite youngish & are pretty tame.

Managed to grab them & get them in a dog cage yesterday evening and then kept them in the garage overnight as it was pretty rainy & windy plus there are foxes around.

Have let them out again today to have a wander round, which they're doing quite happily.

Not planning on keeping them permanently. How do I look after them temporarily till I find a rescue or someone else to take them.

They've had some wild garden bird food & some apples & whatever they've foraged (slugs & raspberries definitely eaten).

Right now they're huddled together under a tree sheltering from the rain.

Can't advise on care but if you have a local branch of Fresh Start for Hens, they may be able to rehome them for you

LeChien · 25/08/2015 14:31

If you're anywhere near me I'll have them and add them to our lot.
I'm in North Yorkshire, pm me for a more specific location.

If not, perhaps put a note up in a local shop or at a local vet or something.

Care wise, if you could get a small bag of layer's pellets or poultry wheat that would keep them happy, alongside any foraging. Good idea to bring them in at night.
Make sure they have access to water.

Well done for,taking them in!

Eat them!

Thebirdsneedseeds · 25/08/2015 14:33

Nah only joking. Kep them as pets? Rehome them? I'd keep them. DH would have a fit. Ds would be delighted!

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 25/08/2015 14:33

If you're anywhere near suffolk/essex border I'll have them

Wow - I wish this would happen to me! Though your neighbour sounds like a knob Sad

I'm in Kent and I think that's a bit far, I hope they find a home - meanwhile if anyone in Kent has a similar situation I am in the market for a chook or two Smile
