We got our three banties in late september, at around 13 weeks - so knew it was unlikely that they would lay before the summer. However, on Tuesday morning I found an egg that I think was laid on Monday, and then we found another (freshly laid!) on Wednesday AND another on Thursday!

One of our barnevelders has been looking 'ready' for about a month, and the other is a little further behind (the pekin is waaay off) but we wondered about the eggs - is it normal for one chook to lay so many straight off, or is it likely that barnie no. 2 is joining in?

Congratulations! Could be one or two. If you really want to know put different coloured food colouring on the outside of their vents and see what colour stains the eggs.

Sometimes they do jump straight into regular laying, so it could well be one.
I got my current hens in autumn last year and two of them started laying in the week between Christmas and New Year.

We got our bantams in the summer, they are 24 weeks now and we thought they would wait until the spring due to light levels etc. We had our first two eggs yesterday and I was so excited!

oooooo i hadn't thought about the food colouring idea! I've been watching the pattern (of laying) and it had an addition yesterday... so if tomorrow is a two egg day then it's definitely 2 out of 3! We've had nine so far, I'm beyond impressed with my ladies.

Cybercat it's really exciting isn't it! We're going to have gammon and eggs for dinner today. I feel right proper civilised!
