Hi, can anyone tell me about selling eggs? Do i need to register with somewhere or need a licence? I cant remember what website i had to go to for the info so thought i would come here Smile I need to buy a hen house soon and the size depends on how many birds i want which depends on if and how easy it is to sell the eggs. Im in Scotland, not sure if that makes any difference.

I sell mine from the gate, technically you aren't supposed to describe them as being a certain size or free range / garden. I just write on the box 'smaller sizes' £1 and larger £1.20 - you only have to register if you have 50+ birds

Haven't checked regs lately but I think you have to write a 3 week use by date on them and not sell eggs from hens in contact with a cockerel.

If you have less than 350 birds you can sell, but can't grade them,
sell for resale, or for commercial catering.
Over 350 birds and you have to get a producer number, grade and stamp your eggs, but can sell to anyone.

Oh, over 50 birds you should register your flock, but it's free and doesn't put any restrictions on you. It's in case of major problems such as Bird Flu, so Defra know where the livestock are.

Sorry forgot, no restrictions on running cockerels with hens.
