They've gone on holiday for 10 days and they have left me to look after their 8 chickens. I'm petrified I'm going to do something daft and kill one or all of them.

I'm not really into chickens although they are funny how they start to cluck as soon as you go anywhere near them, I am an animal lover though but it tends to be canine and feline varieties for me!

I gave them some cucumber tonight which they seemed to enjoy, and I;ve been given exacting information on the mix for feed/corn/gravel to give them, but it does not stop me worrying though.

Please tell me they are far hardier than they look...

I look after our neighbours' chickens when they go away. The first night I worried that Mr Fox would call and so I was up at 6am to let them out!

All went well and I eventually relaxed. The neighbours still trust me with them several years later.

You can have a good conversation with a chicken ....

Just left mine with the neighbour for a week and one died...not to make you worry though but chickens do drop dead randomly through no fault of anyone. Our one had a massive prolapse. Neighbour very pleased that we didn't hold the chicken death against him but really, most chicken owners are quite relaxed! Anyway, we have his kids hamsters next week...

Mostly you should worry about how much chickens can grow on you and you'll be wanting your own next. Smile

lol @ Sheila!

BPB I don't think they will grow on me, not really my thing. Although my 5 cats might want me to change my mind!

One thing they did not cover was what to do with the glut of eggs. I've got more than I can handle and they've only been gone just under three days!

Give the eggs away to people, they don't last for ever.

I've given out quite a few boxes already, just never occured to me that they laid quite so many. I expected about 3 a week per chicken, not one pretty much every day!
