quails?

So, am set on silkie chickens. Who are not great layers, but are great pets and don't scratch the garden quite as much as other chooks. And, they look really funky.

They are broody too - so I wondered about getting fertilised quail eggs to hatch and then we could have a bunch of quails for eggs. I know they'll need a different run from the chooks, and that they need to be wing clipped and kept inside.

anyone keep quail? How many eggs do you get?
thanks

Have kept quail when younger, they are flighty little things. Get about 2 eggs a week, though they sometimes stop in the winter completely. If you keep them in an arc with a low roof put some foam on the top, as when they are startled they jump rapidly straight up into the air, and can knock themselves out on the top of their run if it's hard enough.

They don't like wet, mud, cold, being handled or other birds. Overall rather cute, but rather temperamental fussy things.

I used to have quail and hope to again one day soon.

You need one male to about five females so if you hatch them yourself you'll need to do something with the other males (we ate them)
You may find that even with enough females the males fight so might need to divide into batches

Used to get loads of eggs. Five plus a week from each girl
