Tell me about your Eglu Classic...

Is the Eglu worth the money? There are lots on eBay and I am wondering whether I would be better to get an Eglu or something more traditional and shedlike.

TIA

Totally worth it! But, depends what you think will happen. I have

  1. Eglu Classic (began with 3 hens)
  2. Eglu Cube (when I got 6 more)
  3. Custom built wooden run with the Cube house inside - because my chooks have trashed my garden and I want my lawn back

Totally worth it ! Smile, my 3 chickens have lived happily in their pink Eglu for 18 months and lay gorgeous eggs each day, the Eglu needs little maintenance, is easy to clean and although foxes have visited the garden, so far the ladies have been safe and secure. I think it is a fab hen house.

Grockle · 27/03/2012 18:06

Daftwit - do you let yours out or do they stay in the run all the time?

AliceHurled · 27/03/2012 18:07

Yep worth it. And if you change your mind you can resell it easy

daftwit · 27/03/2012 18:10

Grockle, i have an extended run, so they stay in there but let them free range each day when someone is in the garden, not worth the risk to let them out if no one is around.

Every time I clean my Eglu I appreciate it - to be able to do a serious deep clean in 10 mins is pretty nice, and they've never had lice or red mite in the 2 years I've had them (though they have had scaly leg mite).

Mine are confined to the run atm because they do most damage to the garden in the spring, but in a few months once everything's established I'll let them out again.

I started off moving the Eglu around the lawn but made a fixed run eventually because I was tired of always having parts of the lawn in a state, especially in the winter when it takes a long time to recover.

TunipTheVegemal · 27/03/2012 18:11

I mean I made a fixed base for the run

totally worth it, got a cube, had it 4 years and still looks like new, 10mins a week to clean out and hose down, got 2 extensions and is more than enough room for my 5 hens.

Yay! So pleased the feedback is good. Lovely DH bought me an eglu go for my birthday yesterday. Yippee!!! I have bought the extension and now have to decide between bantams or bigger birds...
