I have agreed to take 4 chickens from my DD's school after the children have watched them hatch etc. - great - love chickens - have the space for them. What I didn't realise is that they will be arriving when they are a few weeks old!!!! Shock
Have spoken to the company who provide them and they have told me that I can either keep them indoors - a good, but smelly option - or get a heat lamp for them and have them in the outhouse.
Will they be ok in the outhouse in a box with the heatlamp over them or am I better getting some kind of cage whilst they are small?
Sorry this is long, but we have set our hearts on these chickens, now I just have to figure out what things I need for such young chicks!!
Any advice???

Put them into the outhouse with the heatlamp. They will create too much mess and poo if you keep them indoors.

They will grow quickly and I wouldn't think they'd fit inside a cage for very long.

Thanks ilovemyhens - I have found a local poultry farmer guy who is going to advise me with what I will need - been doing lots of research and I think you are right - outhouse with heat lamp.
God - this is more stressful than preparing for a baby!!!!!

Presumably you will be OK if some of them are cockerels? Just be careful that the outhouse is secure - as chicks are very vulnerable. Sounds like a lovely thing to do - they will be more bonded because they are so young....
