The most disgusting thing I have had to do....

chickenwise anyway.
The past few days Norma has started laying again (we really thought she had given up.yesterday morning they were making such a fuss that I went out to have a look and Erica was looking in on the nest box and Norma was trying to lay but when I looked she had got half of a broken very thin shelled egg hnging out of her and the other half was still in her.
So whilst dh held her I had to use tweezers in her merry (which was still opening up and trying to push it out) and pull it out. It was all wrapped up like a quill and once I got hold of it it was easy to get out.
She's absolutly fine today but it was the most yucky thing I have ever done!
Just wanted to share with chickeny people!

That sounds horrible, but at least you were able to help her. Get some oyster shell to sprinkle down for them.

If the soft/thin shelled eggs persist, try worming with Flubenvet.

We're swapping posts ilovemyhens Grin

We've done flubenvet recently so going to start on the oyster shell again.
Neighbours must have thought we were more bonkers than ever!

Aw bless. I've never had this to deal with....yet Confused

My light sussex was laying softies when I first got her, but that was because she had mycoplasma and had three courses of antibiotics before it went. The softies came back once, but went after I wormed her.

Think its also probably to do with her being a ex batt (although I do tend to blame everything on this!)
It gave me an insight into being a midwife-ha ha!

I have had to nurse a hen with a prolapse - it made me cry and throw up at the same time. The prolapse - with the help of cream - miraculously went back in and she had a few more weeks of life. I had to wash her three times a day as well.

The funny thing is, she was previously a bad-tempered unfriendly girl and she completely put trust in me. Although it was disgusting - I was proud that I did it.

You did a good job!

MissBeehiving · 23/01/2011 19:34

Occasionally, my girls will lay a double yolker and will have a partial prolapse for which the treatment is; rinse area with warm water and insert finger Shock.

amummyinwaiting · 23/01/2011 22:08

ah thanks punkatheart ! They do seem to know when your helping dont they?
MissB I'm sure if I was on the same situation as the two of you I would do the same but it's hideous isn't it?!

Ha ha! I think you go through the pain barrier on that after the first one! You'll be rifling with your chicken's bits in future without giving it a thought.Grin

brambleschooks · 23/01/2011 22:16

Mmmm yummy and I thought hand washing a poo encrusted chicken arse and blow drying away the stench of ammonia was bad enough!

ChickensFlyingUnderTheRadar · 23/01/2011 22:19

I once had to pull congealed puss from a chicken's eyelid. Chicken eye puss is rubbery and smells like cheese, incidentally

brambleschooks · 24/01/2011 07:50

Boak. Where's the hide thread thing ;)

amummyinwaiting · 24/01/2011 17:32

Ah chickens you are like a chickeny earth mother :)
When we got our ex batts from possibly the maddest couple in the world (dh thought they were brother and sister) that told us about the cheesy pus and that their was no need to take them to the vets if they had a boil as you could just pick at it until the dry cheese came out! They also had a paralised chicken that they pushed around in a childrens toy pushchair!
missbeehiving I could do a chicken magic trick!ha ha!

You can use oil for the crop thing too - and for stuck eggs - steam the bum over very hot water then syringe oil up the bum (the vent will eat the oil up )- [need vomit emoticon]

Can you tell I have done these things many times?
