Or might she restart if the weather warms up a bit?

the one I am thinking of is a Light Sussex; until the snow she was laying about 5 a week.

in the same boat, our hens have laid fewer eggs in the winter but this month nothing, I dont know the answer I'm afraid

fortunately my best hybrid is still going strong.

This is perfectly normal, its due to the amount of sunlight the hen received. There is an old country saying that hens lay between valentines day and bonfire night, not strictly accurate but pretty good estimate I think. If you want them to lay eggs you'll have to use artifical lighting on a timer.

most hybrids will keep going (but are less likely to lay so many after their first year)
pure breeds and less hardy hybrids will stop or slow down.

they're suppsoed to need 14 hours of daylight every day to make an egg.

if you're worried, give them a pouch of cat food and some poultry spice in their water for a couple of weeks.
the protein should help them get back to normal, too.

I'd say that the extreme cold weather has stopped her. It takes a lot of energy to make an egg, and in extreme conditions the hen will conserve her energy for heat etc. The cold plus the long dark nights have put her off (I don't blame her, actually).

I agree Chickens, it seems perfectly reasonable of her Grin

My Light Sussex is laying every day at the moment - but we have a heat lamp for her..so that may be a factor....

We had eggs again this morning after a month due I think to introducing a bit more protein into the diet. They are reasonably warm too at the moment since the cube has been moved into DHs lawnmower shed much to his annoyance!

My Bluebelle hasn't laid since June (broody, then moulting, then just bloody perverse!).
My Nera died about a month ago, and had stopped laying about a month before that.
Went to clean the house today and ds2 came with me to collect the eggs, I told him not to bother as there wouldn't be any - and there were 2 fresh eggs in the next box :)
Lovely start to the new year - hope that the new Nera and the Goldline that I brought today will soon be joining her.

My black rock had about 3 weeks off and has laid every day since :) My Light Sussex came into lay 4 days ago for her very first time and then yesterday my Wyandotte who stopped in about October started again - my joy is unbounded!
