There's a local show coming up, dd1 has expressed an interest in showing a hen or two...

...or maybe an egg?

Fab - what breed standard are you after?

meltedmarsbars · 27/10/2010 21:31

Maran? - boring, I'm afraid, but she did raise them herself from eggs donated by a kindly old gent here.

Marans are lovely - I was showing at the Poultry Club a couple of weekends ago and was lusting after the beautiful eggs in the Maran class.

Breed standard is is here. I would check that you are showing a standard colour and then discount birds with any serious defects according to the breed standard first.

You need to wash them at least a week beofre the show to allow the oil back into the feather.

Thanks!

The eggs are beautiful, aren't they! Smile

Yes lovely. Let me know if you want any showing tips and I'll PM you. Smile

We only have a couple of them in our mixed flock - they belong to my dd1 who wants to take something to our local show. They are probably not even to standard, let alone anything special!

She knows that, so its more about taking part, having a go.

Mine weren't to standard when I started - it's addictive though! My DS loves it. There might be a junior handler class - that's judged not only on the bird how much the child knows about looking after them etc When's the show?

Well????

We didn't take any of ours, after looking at he breed website, but helped out a friend wash hers ("borrowed" her teenage son's toothbrush for the feet! Blush), she got two 2nds and a 3rd!

There were some very odd-shaped hens there!

Hopefully he didn't use it afterwards!

Some of the poultry is very strange - I can never see the attraction in the game birds.
