Two new baby chicks for me

Tippychoocks · 26/08/2010 00:21

Just had two baby chicks delivered. Supposed to be Buff Orpingtons but obviously not as they are black Grin. Hopefully both female.

Long story about how they came and I do worry about them not being in feather in time for winter but they are cuteness. They're snuggled up indoors as outside is too rainy and full of mean chickens.

Anyone like to guess the breed? They are black with yellow markings on the face. The elder one has feathery legs. A darker Orpington maybe?

Lovely. How old are they Tippy?

bramblebooks · 26/08/2010 14:50

cochins or brahmas? Gorgeous!

saltyseadog · 26/08/2010 15:56

What bramblebooks said. My brahma chicks were born with feathery legs and boots - so cute!

sorky · 26/08/2010 16:07

Congratulations Grin

how lovely!

We had two eggs hatch last week. They are not mine but I am on chicken duty this week. Any idea how long do they stay with surrogate mum? When can they go in with the other hens?

Tippychoocks · 26/08/2010 18:57

Sorry, typed a reply and had to shut down.

They were not quite left on the doorstep in a baby basket but may as well have been so I have zero info other than they are supposed to be female, old enough to come off heat lamps (not true at all poor wee things) and are orpingtons.

The bigger I am guessing is 2-3 weeks as she has some proper wing feathers and is a lot sturdier. The small one hasn't eaten anything and I'm bracing myself for bad news. I'm giving her water drops with a syringe , which has worked for me before, but not at all sure about her.

I don't mind what they are really, as long as they are girls Grin. I have Marans at the mo but have had all sorts of Heinz 57s before so it doesn't bother me either way.

Try tapping your finger in the chick crumb to stimulate appetite. Is she lively or hunched up and is there any blood in her droppings?

Tippychoocks · 26/08/2010 20:09

No, she's a hunched up wee scrap, spending all her time trying to get underneath the other one. I have them on a hot bottle and I think tonight will decide it one way or another.
Last time I had a poorly one like this it was the Tippy of my name and I was 9 months pg. I kept her in the not-inconsiderable shelf of my bosom for a day or so and she got much better Grin

I have to settle for an electric hen. My bosom, even when pregnant is not capacious. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Tippychoocks · 27/08/2010 18:25

Small one died last night Sad. Bigger one (Eglantine) woke whole house with mourning cheeps and has been carried around all day by me or my 3yo since.

Am now debating getting a replacment for a chick I never wanted, just so the other one doesn't have to spend the next few weeks until she is old enough to go out alone wth the big hens Confused

Aw bless it - at least it didn't linger in pain.

It might be worth seeing what they say on omlet - they know muchness. Hope new one is a she!

Tippychoocks · 27/08/2010 19:12

I might try Omlet for guess-the-breed when I take pictures, good idea.

Eglantine luckily is fit as a flea and seems to be OK alone (sitting on my shoulder as I type this) so I too really hope she's a girl. But I've no hope of finding out for a couple of weeks as I am useless at sexing.

bramblebooks · 27/08/2010 19:15

Good plan for a guess the breed.

Aw bless. Are you sure she's not a feather booted parrot?

bramblebooks · 27/08/2010 19:15

... omlet are also good at guess the sex!

Tippychoocks · 27/08/2010 19:19

Parrot has just pooed and it rolled down into my cleavage. Oh the glamour Grin. Yuk.

tee hee - that's a candidate for the things I found down my bra thread I did ages ago!

pmsl! Not sprinkling garden lime on that.

Tippychoocks · 29/08/2010 21:04

Well I've had her as a parrot until this afternoon when the replacement (don't ask) for the wee one came. Ridiculous getting a replacement for one of two that I didn't particularly want in the first place but the alternative was to have her cheeping non stop and weeks of her being lonely. And I like them no they're here. So Orpie no2 came. Much bigger and healthier and a fetching shade of blue grey. No trousers on this one though.

Grin. Photos?...

Tippychoocks · 29/08/2010 23:00

Cannot even link bramble so that seems a folorn hope. I will take some tomorrow and post.
It filtered down to me with the second delivery that they are not Buff Orpingtons after all (nooooooooo? really?) but are Orpingtons, which is what I thought. So I should have a blue and chocolate. I'll try with the photos so you can see if you think so.
