My hens are rubbish at being mums but they are very pretty, I'd like to breed from them but would prefer to stick their fertile eggs under a broody hen than into an incubator.... what breed is the broodiest?

Silkies! I am selling my two because all they want to do is sit Grin Seriously, you can't go wrong with a silkie Wink

Have heard that Pekins are really broody and, if you want large fowl, Orpingtons. Our Orp is only 7 months so hasn't gone broody yet but I look forward to next summer ... esp as DS wants to put eggs under her Grin

I have pekins, too, and they do go broody. Nowhere near as often as silkies, though. The silkies have been broody for most of the last four months Hmm They even sit on stones Grin

Chickens - what are you saying about my favourite breed? Besmirching their reputation. Wink

My lot have been pretty good this summer, I have about 40 hens and maybe have 1 or 2 broody at at time. Except for this week when they are arguing over the nest boxes.

Grin I thought they had a great reputation! (For being broody Grin)

Brahmas are annoyingly, persistent at being broody. I have one at present sitting on eggs - due to hatch this weekend .

Porridge - do you sell silkies? I would love a pair :)

isthatporridgeinyourhair · 19/08/2010 10:06

Yes Salty, I sell off the stock that I'm not going to show (or have shown and don't want to do so again). So they're either POL or a year old depending on what you want. I.m in Norfolk.

Unfortunately you're the other side of the country to us porridge. However I keep trying to persuade dh to holiday in Norfolk so I may be in touch in the future :o.
