I was driving down a country lane one that I have been driving everyday since last year, the road is 60 I was doing about 50, the csr infront of me stopped suddenly because the car infront of him stopped suddenly and as soon as I saw his break lights I pushed my foot so hard on the break but the car didn't slow down in time and I hit the back of the car very hard, my car is damaged and will be a write off, there was a lady passanger in the back of the car and she was injured she hurt her neck and couldn't move it properly, the ambulance and police came, did a breathalyser which was 0, took my details ans said they would be in touch if they needed anything else. But im feeling so guilty for the women they took her to hospital to be assessed she got out of thr car with help ans they put her in the ambulance with a red box thing round her head, I cant sleep properly or eat much and I just keep replying over and over in my mind , im so worried about her ans I dont even know how she is, and I dont know what's going to happen to me with the police, and im also scared to drive again

Oh, download and play Tetris this evening. Studies have shown it stops PTSD developing after you have been through something traumatic

I really feel for you. Firstly, most of the people here commenting that you must have been too close will have themselves been too close to a car in front of them at some point in their lives. It's something almost every driver does, however infrequently, and it's just bad luck that you got caught out in a situation like this. Secondly, that you feel so guilty and sick about it is genuinely the measure of a decent person in my book.

I would really recommend following up with the police. Could you get your husband to call when he's not working? Or if you can bring yourself to do it just remember that the person on the other end of the line won't be judging you one bit, they will have no personal connection to the case and they deal with hundreds of enquiries every day.

It's also worth remembering that, whoever was at 'fault', you've also been through trauma. You really need to try to be kind to yourself. Write down a few things you'd say to a friend who ended up in this position and read those things back to yourself. And please try not to take negative comments on here to heart, a lot of people love to use the internet as an anger outlet and it's not personal.

Best of luck x

Thankyou, yes I could try and get my friend to call on my behalf to rest my mind that she is okay, because at the moment that's all im thinking about.I went to work today and i was doing my work but my mind was elsewhere and I was sonquiet which I guess is normal, but yeah i need to try and move on but wirh me if i have something on my mind i need to talk about it which is why I posted on here to get some clarity/ confort/opinions etc.I will try ans be kind to myself moving forward, I also have other things on my mind aswell and its just to much. But yes i will tey and love myself again x

Realistically we all drove too close and under the stopping distance. Walmart country lanes where you can’t see round the corner, you do t creep round at 10mph and no one on the motorway keeps those two chevrons apart. Which is shit but all those saying you didn’t leave enough stopping distance do the same.

Yoi sound like a lovely person and you can always ask the family member or police how she is .
you will be in shock too so take care of yourself

Yeah i know , just need to try and move on and learn from this and be at the most carful I can be now

Feeling guilt, anxiety and remorse is how we learn to be better people. At least you’re more likely to leave the correct stopping distance next time.

Random321 · 05/09/2026 23:12

Your reaction is understandable and shoes the kind of person you are but you need to forgive yourself.

It wasn't intentional.
No drink.
Ni drugs.
No speeding.
No mobile phone use.
No wrecklessness.

I think it's normal to think your brakes didn't react enough. The trauma and fear will distort it in your head.

You did everything you could to prevent it at the time.

As car accidents go, it could have been a lot worst so in the overall scheme of things this is one that you have to forgive yourself.

There's nothing to judge for you do stop judging yourself.

Look, put things in perspective! No one was seriously injure and your insurance will pay up. If you are done for driving without due care and attention it will be fairly low level. I'll be fine, stop worrying😉

I know how you feel OP, and although you think it won’t, it WILL pass. I was on a mini roundabout and thought a bus wasn’t going to stop, so I steered to get out the way and couldn’t correct it in time to leave the roundabout. I ended up driving over the little island at the exit and took out a bollard and one of those posts that lights the signs up.

For over a week I felt like public enemy no1, when in reality the only feelings people had towards me were care and concern. I couldn’t stop thinking that there could have been children or others on the island when I drove over it.

It’s a horrible thing to happen, but if you learn from it, it will pass. Hope you manage to sleep xx

BeaTwix · 05/09/2026 23:48

I rear ended someone on dual carriageway. It was my fault from an insurance POV.

it happened because someone pulled out unexpectedly to overtake a tractor (rural!!)

Anway the car I was driving was written off, insurance dealt with it all, ny family still take the piss and I found out years later there had been a personal injury claim by the other driver.

However, it took my ages to feel confident driving again and I still get twitchy about stopping distances and so many people don’t drive safely. I’d really try to get back in a familiar car and drive. At the time this accident happened I didn’t have a car (I don’t need one as I live in the middle of a city with great public transport) and was using zip cars on the odd ocassion I did need one. Getting regular use of a familiar car made a huge difference and I’m very grateful to my friend who facilitated this

You must’ve been too close for 50mph- stopping distance for that speed in dry conditions is about 53 metres (I looked it up).

Helpful.

Ok so you had an accident and its your fault. It's not unheard of, Ive had one of those too.

The passenger will be treated and will be paid compensation by your insurer.

The cars will be sorted by your insurer. You will pay the excess, job done.

I hope you are not injured.

Police will do nothing.

Don't let it stop you driving, just take the learning from it. Everything will be sorted.

Hi op, hope you got a bit of sleep. I used to work in a rural area and once had to slam on when someone came round a blind bend. I wasn't going fast but my car continued to move as there was mud and stones on the road. Luckily I didn't hit them but I'm wondering if something like this could have happened to you?
On another note, someone went out into the back of me when I was at a set of lights. There was more damage to his car but he would not acknowledge that he had hit my car. I ended up having to take pictures and leave but I called 101 to do a welfare check as he seemed so confused They refused and told me to contact my insurance, so I don't think you have anything to worry about with the police.
And I second the playing Tetris. The eye movement helps reprogram how the brain stores trumatic memories.

Why did you not press the brake to the floor initially? That's what you do in an emergency situation surely?
Also had you been drinking and are you drinking now as your partly use of the brakes and all the errors in your posts are concerning.
You will get better advice on here if you are honest.

If you had read OP’s posts you would see that she read zero when breathalysed.

Oh bless you yeah uts just awful when something like this happens, the police were okay but not extremely mad at me, they have proberly seen much worse and drivers who have no compassion for what they have done, or have been on drugs of drinking.Yeah I will try the tetris tonight
