I was driving down a country lane one that I have been driving everyday since last year, the road is 60 I was doing about 50, the csr infront of me stopped suddenly because the car infront of him stopped suddenly and as soon as I saw his break lights I pushed my foot so hard on the break but the car didn't slow down in time and I hit the back of the car very hard, my car is damaged and will be a write off, there was a lady passanger in the back of the car and she was injured she hurt her neck and couldn't move it properly, the ambulance and police came, did a breathalyser which was 0, took my details ans said they would be in touch if they needed anything else. But im feeling so guilty for the women they took her to hospital to be assessed she got out of thr car with help ans they put her in the ambulance with a red box thing round her head, I cant sleep properly or eat much and I just keep replying over and over in my mind , im so worried about her ans I dont even know how she is, and I dont know what's going to happen to me with the police, and im also scared to drive again

You sound like a very anxious person in general. OP. (Just an observation, not at all a criticism.) Us anxious types do tend to magnify and catastrophise. I don’t advocate heading to the GP every time something unfortunate happens, but if this anxiety persists into next week I would definitely consider getting a bit of support if you can. It sounds relatively minor to those of us outside looking in, but as the one who experienced it of course it doesn’t feel minor to you.

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:21

Omg its that much what if you dont have that sort of money

Try not to be too hard on yourself. it was an accident. If you still aren't feeling better about it after a while, you can try therapy too because these types of things are traumatizing

Yes, this.

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:23

Yeah i am to be fair, but I am very caring person and I like to help people as much as I can I worry a lot so this is just making my head go crazy

I know the police see every worse accidents everyday, but this was my first and hopefully last time and I just don't know what to do with myself.I am going to have to rent a car i think as finding and buying a car takes time

Does your car insurance policy not include a courtesy car whilst yours is assessed and fixed/written off? Check your policy and if you aren’t sure then phone them again to ask. Car hire can be very expensive and if it’s included in your policy it will save you a lot.

Had you built up your no claims bonus on your insurance? And if so have you protected it? If so then technically all this accident should cost you is the insurance excess.

ThatJadeLion · 05/09/2026 20:23

Please be kind to yourself. Take your mind off it. Insurance will sort it out. Don't keep beating yourself up over it, you've done enough of that. Every time it comes into your head, throw it out. Everything will be fine x

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:24

Oh sorry to hear that apparently air bags are horrible when they go off, my air bag didnt go off in this situation

OP posts:
missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:26

I can only get a courtesy car if mine is being repaired but they are going to.weote it off i think

I went in to the back of someone years ago - at low speed though - pulling out. We all have accidents, no-one was killed. You weren’t drinking. Insurance will deal (although never heard of the ambulance charging). Try and relax, and just deal with things as they arise. It is shocking to be in an RTA though and doubtless that doesn’t help matters either.

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:11

Okay thankyou , I will just pay whatever I need too

Honestly it sounds like you’ll just have to pay the excess. I didn’t mean to worry you mentioning about ambulance costs. I just remember being shocked when I got the bill. But sounds like now it goes directly to the insurance and they pay

Yello24 · 05/09/2026 20:26

A woman smashed into the back of me a few weeks ago. Was quite a shock but in the end just an insurance and admin headache. The main thing is I don’t ‘hate’ her. I felt bad for her. She seemed a nice woman.
You haven’t done anything terrible. You’re just an ordinary decent person who has had a very ordinary accident. Happens to most of us at some point. It will all pass and be a blip in peoples lives. Try not to worry so much.

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:26

I dont have any support really, my husband is working very long hours, my mum just automatically judged me and said yoy must of been to close, and my dad hasent even messaged me to ask if im okay. All I can do now is stop crying and see what happens but I would love to know how the women but therr is no way to find out

When was your car last MOT’d ? They will have checked the brakes then. It does sound as though you were too close, it is easy to get a bit blasé on roads you know well, so when you are back on the road again this will be something you remember.

There have also been warnings about road surfaces being more slippery after all the heat followed by rain, so maybe we all need to be taking a bit more care.

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:28

Toy didnt worry me if I have to pay it I will, all I want is the women to be okay

OP posts:
FancyLilacHare · 05/09/2026 20:28

Honestly please stop worrying about this.

Yes you were driving too close. That happens all the time and most of the time people get away with it because they don't have to stop suddenly. You were unlucky that this was one of those times when you did have to stop suddenly and so you couldn't.

Please learn from it and stop driving up people's arses, it's annoying and antisocial and you know you shouldn't do it but I guess some people just have to learn the hard way. Be thankful that you haven't killed anyone and that it's unlikely that the police will take this any further.

As long as you're properly insured you haven't actually committed any crime because driving up people's arses is something that nobody can prove you were doing maliciously and in fact most people do it without realising they are. It's generally a mistake, not a deliberate act of careless or dangerous driving. And it's so common that there would be no time to prosecute anybody else if it were actually prosecuted routinely.

Calm down and stop panicking.

Sent a bill of the ambulance? This isn’t Australia

We’ve covered this. Apparently it’s also no longer the 1990s 🤣. Who knew?

TheGoodEnoughWife · 05/09/2026 20:29

SoSoOuting · 05/09/2026 20:19

Why did you not press the brake to the floor initially? That's what you do in an emergency situation surely?
Also had you been drinking and are you drinking now as your partly use of the brakes and all the errors in your posts are concerning.
You will get better advice on here if you are honest.

Why are you asking if the OP had been drinking? Why are you trying to make her feel worse? She blew zero. It is in the first post.

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:29

Yeah i know the women seemed okay with me when I went to the csr and asked if she was okay while I was crying histercly and she said are yoy okay etc but obviously I still feel bad

I'm not sure what haplend but I remember pressing the breaks so hard and it just felt like the car was not slowing down and I knew I was going to hit

Be prepared for a huge increase in insurance premium for years to cone, especially if you are under 25

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:32

No inwaa not drinking they did a breathalyser test there and then it as 0, ans im not drinking now I dont really drink only on special occasions.I pressed the break as i seen ahead of me the break light which was quite far away, then I pushed rigth to the floor

OP posts:
missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:34

I dont care about that the most important thing for me is that the women is okay

Your right i deserve what ever happens to me

You don’t deserve anything bad. You are not a bad person, accidents happen xx

Natsku · 05/09/2026 20:37

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:18

Yeah indi press them as hard as I can but maybe not hard enough like emergency stop then but I did press them so hard and it did feel like it wasent slowing down quick enough ans almost kiddy but I dont think there was any skid or break marks

Did you press the clutch down at the same time? I had to stop quickly the other day as a fox ran out into the road and slammed both the brake and clutch down and was amazed how quickly the car stopped (though it was a close thing, was about an inch away from killing that poor fox)

missymoomel · 05/09/2026 20:37

I will definitely learn from this i dont ever want to feel like this again, I wasent right up his arse I dot remember being so close to him like that, but clearly not far enough behind to stop .I will try ns stop panicking I learn from this
