Buying first car in York area

My son (late 20s) has lived in York since uni, hasn’t needed to drive before but has just passed his test. He is looking for a hatchback with four doors, 2016 onwards, for driving out of York but not every day.
He has a colleague who is keen on cars and a brother who can help (but south). He just needs that initial “push”. I love research and looking for cars but wouldn’t feel confident making a final decision. I’m in London.
I recommended he goes to a car supermarket nearby for a first look and wondered if anyone has recommendations around the York or Leeds area that they would trust and are fairly priced?
Also any tips for the actual car - reliable, economical (insurance and running costs) etc. He’s not bothered about any particular makes.

I’d forgotten that they did shoes other than the coloured canvas Chuck Taylor basketball boots, even though I’ve owned some non-basketball boots I the past.

But re:cars — He could do worse than look at ŠKODA Fabia/Rapid/Scala, or a VW Golf or Polo. The big ŠKODA dealers in W Yorks certainly are DM Keith - I wouldn’t go to them, I’ve had dreadful service from them in the past. There’s a VW dealership at Clifton Moor (JCT600) - I might start there. In fact there are loads of car dealerships at Clifton Moor. There’s a big Arnold Clark car supermarket place a bit further round the ring road at Nether Poppleton. DH has had recent excellent service from Arnold Clark in Wakefield, so I’d be tempted to start with their York branch.

Arnold Clark will bring cars from one branch to another for you, if you see something you’re interested in on their website.

We’ve also had a lot of Toyota Aurises as work fleet cars, which seem to have been pretty reliable (more do than the MGs were getting these days).
