Car recommends!

Morning all!

After our car was written off in a carpark, we are on the hunt for a new family vehicle.
Budget of 10k, second hand. Keen for something with low-ish mileage, not too old? Was looking at Nissan Quashquai or something similar? What do people recommend for reliability & space? Boot space is essential, our previous car was snug!

Skoda Octavia? Massive boot space and reliable

How many people does it need to fit? Any dogs or equipment that need to go in as well?

Family of 4, one car seat. One medium sized dog too!

Second vote for a Skoda.....ours in now 15 years old, still drives like a new car and is super reliable. I wouldn't touch a Nissan atm, too many people have had problems

Oh that’s really interesting, we did have a Nissan before said prick drove straight into it… but only had it 3 years.
I will have a nosey as Octavia’s, thankyou! We checked out an MG SX (or Zx can’t remember now!) this morning & it was surprisingly roomy, but have no experience of MG. It’s a minefield!

Nissan is no longer the reliable brand that it once was.
I have a Skoda Karoq and I love it.

I have a Nissan Qashqai. 67 plate, had it 5 years myself and never had a days bother with it. Think it’s luck of the draw to be honest!

How about a Mazda CX5 perhaps? Had a larger Mazda SUV as a rental on holiday recently and it was brilliant. Skoda also a good shout though.

I thought I wanted a Nissan Quashquai till I sat in one. It’s too short at the front and no where near enough leg room in back for my DC. I ended up buying a Ford C Max from the Ford dealership next door. Buy a Ford they’re great and mine has lasted years with no issues.

Coming from a different angle, have you considered leasing? I never had and had always saved for my next car, so when the time came, I had the money to replace it. However, this time, when my 12 year old car was beginning to show signs of needing some pretty substantial work in the not too distant future, I just had a browse online out of curiosity. I’m now leasing a Vauxhall Frontera for less than I was saving each month for a replacement car (I’m still saving the difference) AND the savings from the past 12 years are still mine and earning me interest. My lease was no up front deposit and is for 2 years so if I’m not happy and want to go back to owning outright, I’m not committed for too long. Everything is included barring tyres (I’m unlikely to do enough mileage to need to replace them) and the one service it will need (which I’d be paying for anyway if I owned my car).
I’d never have considered leasing before but this time it was a no-brainer. Obviously not all cars are as cheap to lease as mine is, but I’d definitely recommend having a look before you had over a lump of your hard-earned cash for a depreciating asset.

The answer is something Japanese but with the exception of Nissan.

Another vote for an Octavia. Or a Superb if you are a tall family - we are 5’8” x 2, 6’2” and 6’3”. It’s a squeeze lengthwise.

We have a Skoda Superb - it’s brilliant. Really big inside, lots of cabin space, very generous boot. My friend has a Nissan Qashqai and I was surprised at how cramped it feels inside so a car which on the exterior looks so large!

We have a Skoda Kamiq and it’s great!

I mean the Octavia is a squeeze lengthwise. Next car will be a Superb.

I love our Octavia so much ❤️ will likely also look at Superb for our next one though as kids are tall and only getting taller. The only thing I'd change about ours is that we couldn't find one with an in-built satnav at the time so just have to use phones, which annoys me.

I was surprised at how little boot space there was in a Qashqai - I don't know how they've managed to somehow market it as a particularly roomy family car!

We've also had a Hyundai Santa Fe in the past that I've liked, so if you're thinking Japanese I'd maybe take a look at that as a brand although I don't know what they current offer is.
