Does anyone know how this 3p per mile tax on electric cars is going to be calculated in a hybrid car?

I’m reading about this tax and wondering how on earth they’ll calculate what mileage my hybrid does in electric miles over petrol ones?

Good point. It's 1.5p for hybrids, so presumably it's all miles?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 01/12/2025 19:38

Oh lovely. So we pay fuel duty on top of EV. What a fucking joke. My car only does 30 miles per charge and sometimes I forget to charge it. So I’ll be paying 1.5 per mile on my petrol miles?

I think the whole thing is going to turn into such a logistical nightmare to administer that it probably won't go ahead.

hattie43 · 01/12/2025 19:48

How are they going to know what mileage people are doing . It’s another own goal really. Want people to buy electric then make them even more unattractive.

Oblomov25 · 01/12/2025 19:50

I'm wondering too. Bought a Tesla 2nd hand.

itsthetea · 01/12/2025 19:52

Mileage is usually recorded during your MOT and it’s getting harder to fix the mileometers

how anyone can be surprised / a per mile charge would always be brought in at some point to replace the income from fuel duty

our car will still be substantially cheaper to run than. A petrol car

Fleur405 · 01/12/2025 19:53

The proposal is that plug in hybrid electric vehicles will pay at half the rate of fully electric vehicles (so 1.5p per mile)

Wonderknicks · 01/12/2025 19:55

The idea is that you estimate the mileage when you pay your rosd tax, & then it is adjusted the following year (or when you sell it, presumably). It sounds like a logistic nightmare.

How will it work for new cars that don’t need an MOT?

notthatoldchestnut · 01/12/2025 19:57

This is all ok for those who drive in the uk. However for those who regularly drive to the continent (and there are plenty!) - this will not work.

why on earth should we be paying to drive our vehicles on foreign soil. We already pay their tolls.

It does. What if you use your car abroad? Do you still have to pay?

We have done 2000+ miles on road trips around Europe.

Allmarbleslost · 01/12/2025 20:08

It won't happen. Someone will decide it's a huge nightmare to administrate and the whole thing will be forgotten.

Hdbnfnbrjebfb · 01/12/2025 20:10

Can anyone clarify if this is on top of the £195 you pay for an electric car per year? I was looking when she was announcing the budget and it looked like it was?

So 10,000 miles in an electric car will cost you £495 a year in tax, plus either 5% VAT for domestic charging or 20% VAT for public charging.

DH has a company electric car so we’re wondering what is going to be passed to us to fund.

Meanwhile I drive my shitheap car which does something like 50mpg petrol and £20 to tax. I was considering getting a little electric when this conks out but alongside the difficulties of having only electric vehicles, they're also now making it very unappealing.

That’s actually a really good point. I bet you that you will have to pay on all miles. Which is unfair

It looks like it according to that document to protect peoples privacy

Plug In Hybrids (PHEVs), not standard, non-PHEVs.

Also, fuck all clarity on what rate PHEVs will pay when they use their EV power.

Will it be 3p/mile like EVs, or 1.5p?

Some new PHEVs can do 80-100miles on EV only range. How the fuck is this dense Govt going to be able to figure how and when a car is being used under what propelling method?!

Fuckers havent got a clue. Reeves is a lying sack of shit who should be fired - we need a good old Poll Tax style national rebellion against this Lie-bour wet dream of charging motorists to drive.

Only saving grace is that the scheme is so fucked up, it probably wont come in - and if it does, after the 2029 election, whoever the hell wins (sure as hell wont be Lie-bour), will remove it.

Yes it's on top, we've calculated that it will still be cheaper than my petrol car, but it clearly hasn't been thought through 🤔

Linenpickle · 01/12/2025 20:16

It’s stupid as it will cost more to set up and administer. They should just reclassify all cars.

Elbowpatch · 01/12/2025 20:21

A meter built into the car measuring electricity used would be the fairest way and the same way that petrol/diesel is currently taxed.

The more energy you use, the more tax you pay. That way it encourages people to buy more energy efficient cars.

I bought a self-charging hybrid, didn't want a plug in. Is that the 3p per mile? TIA!

Blueuggboots · 01/12/2025 20:36

I do 1100 miles a month in my electric car!!!!

No. Those are not included in this ill thought out scheme.

For now.

Oblomov25 · 01/12/2025 20:37

Had a self charging hybrid, Hyundai. Loved it. Thought go green , EV, electric, that's what the Government wants, to hit green targets.

but then this. How is this encouraging EV, green targets? Non diesel.

Just don't get it?????

Thank you. I was getting quite confused!
