Does anyone know how this 3p per mile tax on electric cars is going to be calculated in a hybrid car?

I’m reading about this tax and wondering how on earth they’ll calculate what mileage my hybrid does in electric miles over petrol ones?

So it’s not definitely happening? I’m thinking I need to change my hybrid to a petrol car otherwise, as the car manufacturers are already stating they will be limiting them due to customers likely feeling just like I do right now.

It would be naive to say it’s not for definite that it will happen - but how it will happen will be a different matter

I’m sure that car salesmen have considered the tactic of pursuing petrol/diesel sales now to “escape EV VED” and will bring that to their war chest of leading questions to gauge the best route to take money from anyone walking into the showroom

Our hybrid only gets 20 miles fully charged!we rarely bloody charge it.

Blushingm · 02/12/2025 11:20

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 01/12/2025 19:38

Oh lovely. So we pay fuel duty on top of EV. What a fucking joke. My car only does 30 miles per charge and sometimes I forget to charge it. So I’ll be paying 1.5 per mile on my petrol miles?

I’m the same. My hybrid has 40 miles on electric the rest on petrol. I never charge it. Why should I pay fuel duty AND electric mileage when I’m not doing electric miles?

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 02/12/2025 11:23

It’s going to make the plug in hybrids with a small electric range expensive to run so I need to have a rethink. It’s not about not being able to afford the changes it’s more trying to factor in current lifestyle and what would suit best. It might be a case of just chucking it in and going back to petrol while those cars are still out there or chucking it in and going full EV.

I have a vocational role that I absolutely love but the pay is crap and the hours are crap. I either need to find a job that makes the commute more sensible or change the car.

If Rachel Thieves and her Lie-bour party are anything to go by, do NOT be surprised if they try to bring PPM for all non public transport.

Cars, bikes, scooters, e-scooters, e-bikes, motorcycles, skateboards, hoverboards, ironing boards - you name it.

The Lie-bour party since even before Tony B-Liar have had endless wet dreams about PPM for cars. If these scumbag politicians get their way, they will bring it in, no matter how good or bad its administered.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 03/12/2025 09:14

I’ve been doing some sums and on average mileage I’d be paying an extra £75 per year for my hybrid .

If I bought an electric car I’d have all the inconvenience of charging the bloody thing if we went on holiday over the charge mileage, plus additional costs of VED and on average mileage and 3p per mile it could cost an additional £300 a year plus buying the car itself which is currently more expensive. Plus insurance of course. Also listening to Martin Lewis yesterday he was talking about the cost of electric going up so of course the actual sole power source is becoming more expensive even though I know some people have overnight deals where they pay less.

Or we chuck the hybrid in and buy a petrol car knowing they plan on increasing the VED on petrol and diesel risking the possibility they could put huge tax hikes on fuel in the future.

All things considered none of it sounds good and all alternatives are shite. This government is obviously trying to force people out of their cars and deinsentivising travel unless necessary. Train tickets are expensive so I guess the idea is we mainly stay at home.

Someone was talking about this on the radio this morning, they did mention double tax.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 03/12/2025 09:18

I know it’s only a consultation paper but we can see where this is going. The roads are congested and the population continues to rise. PPM is probably the solution and I might even suck it up if it means I don’t sit in traffic jams.

I thought hybrids were only going to be 1.5 p per mile you drive.

Yes. So average mileage of 10,000 you play 1.5p per mile on 5,000 regardless of range.

Unless it’s half the money over the full mileage. Shit I’ve divided it by 2 twice haven’t I? Fuck. So it’s £150 not £75.

How are they going to know what mileage people are doing . It’s another own goal really. Want people to buy electric then make them even more unattractive.

Its recorded yearly on your mot.

Don't know how they are going to measure new cars as they don't have an mot for the first 3 years.

Yes - you look to have halved twice
10000 miles @ 1.5p

That’s noted in the consultation

All drivers would submit an estimated mileage at the start of the year, and it would be reconciled on the annual MoT
Vehicles not yet in the MoT system then have a remark that options are to be considered - which could include a garage looking at the mileage without doing an MoT

They are going to estimate it and if you pay too much then good and if you pay too little then you pay them the shortfall.

Your mileage then moves onto the new person who gets the car so anyone who is up and down the motorway all week is going to struggle to move that car on as the next person has to suck up paying tax for a year at an increased rate.

This seems the perfect racket for organised crime to fuck about with software so we end up with cars on the road that have done far more mileage than recorded.

1apenny2apenny · 03/12/2025 12:46

I believe it had been suggested that owners attend an MOT centre every year and their mileage is recorded.

I was looking to buy an EV but will now be sticking with petrol. I believe when the introduced this in Iceland sales of EVs plummeted. What with this and the no luxury cars as mobility vehicles the car industry is in for a difficult time.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 03/12/2025 12:47

They are going to reduce availability of petrol and diesel cars in the UK for this reason. That’s why if I’m going to change car I need to do it soon 🙈

Our EV is 2 years old ,we plan to sell it for a hybrid when it's 3 years old ,so towards the end of next year .
The cost of installation of charger at home has more than paid for itself.
But ..I'm not sure we now will go ahead with a hybrid
If by the middle of next year this hasn't been scrapped,we may rethink completely
