We are looking for a new small electric car which will be put through my company and therefore needs to be purchased (leased in our case) asap. What do people recommend?!

The Renault 5 seems to be raking in the plaudits from the motoring press as a total game changer in the small EV stakes. It's probably a good place to start.

We are just waiting for our first EV to be delivered. A Cupra Born. We got a cracking deal, £7,000 off from the dealer, £1,500 Gov grant and a home charger for £149 including installation. The £7k should have been a dealer contribution towards a pcp deal, but we asked what could they do for a cash deal, and agreed to give us the discount. With a few other bits, a total of £9,700 off the list price, which covers most if the year 1 depreciation. And a 5 year warranty. The manufacturers have a target of 28% total sales to be evs or they are fined £15,000 for each car they miss the target buy, so there should be some good deals about over the next 4 weeks.
Loved the car on the test drive, it is the size of a Golf, and looks sporty, but unless you buy the VZ it isn't. But still nippy enough.

The new Skoda Elroq is worth a look. The bigger Enyaq is great (my friend has one) and the smaller Elroq will probably be my next car. I’m currently in a VW ID4 which is bigger than I need now.

I test drove the Renault 5 and I really liked it but the boy racer stickers put me off because you can’t take them off of you are leasing. I’ve had a Zoe before and I lived that.

I also liked the smart car and it has a lot of features for the price . There are not that many smaller EVs. I ended up with a Volvo EX30 which looks bigger than it actually is, because I got such a good deal. It’s a great car.

I’ve got a VW ID3. Really like it!

@Lincslady53do you mind me asking how you got the government grant?

Kia EV3 with long range battery isn’t very small / but is as small as many of the others mentioned here and is great car. Fits easily into standard car parking spaces at least !

the really small cars tend to have a much more limited range which didn’t work for us

take the expected range , scale it as range times 60/100 - that’s range under battery happy conditions and scale it a bit more for cold weather to get a reasonable idea.

friend who had a corsa - could barely get too and from work and had to charge every night. She got rid of it pretty quickly. But not before a design flaw took it off the road for a few weeks.

which do decent reports and include reliability data - subscribe then cancel.

billandtedsexcellentadventure · 06/01/2026 22:12

@QuietMorningthank you!! That is really useful. I’ll be looking at all of those.

ColdSnowCat · 06/01/2026 22:30

Skoda Enyaq is a bloody massive car, and the Elroq is not much smaller. If you're looking for a small car from the VAG stable an ID3 would be better.

Happy with my Peugeot 208 if you want small, had a Hyundai Kona previously which was bigger and also very happy with that - both very reasonable through my work Salary Sacrifice scheme.

The grant is just added as part of the sales process. Not all cars are applicable, , you can see which are here https://www.gov.uk/plug-in-vehicle-grants/cars

One thing I have noticed is that some cars (Ford Puma) are being advertised at a price that takes the Grant into account, but the car dealer should deal with it. Make sure you ask them and you understand that it is included.

Electric and hybrid vehicles eligible for a plug-in grant

Check which new hybrid and electric vehicles (EV), including cars, vans, trucks and motorbikes, are eligible for a government plug-in grant.

We have had 2 Skoda Octavias and intended getting an Elroq, as we have been really pleased with Skoda. But on launch day we were disappointed at how large it was. The Cupra Born and the ID3 are both built on the same battery and motor, and are about the size of the Golf, so more suitable to what we need. We are picking ours up tomorrow and starting to get wobbles about going electric. I am sure it will be good, but this cold weather isn't the best to be getting a new car. Quite excited though.

I've had the wobbles but picked up a used Renault Zoe this week and she runs beautifully. Was worried about not having a home charger for most of the week (it got fitted yesterday) and it's been fine - even with the reduced range in this weather.

Lincslady53 · 09/01/2026 17:31

We will have a lot to get used to. All the beeps and bongs when we cross the white line, auto hand brake, no gearbox.it will be exciting. Looking forward to it.

crankyhousewife · 10/01/2026 19:20

I love my Fiat 500 but the range is appalling. Fine for me as I just use it for to and from work and the odd trip to supermarket but rubbish for long distances.
