Campervanners - WWYD?

Very specific question here, - I have discussed on VW forums but the conversation tends to tangent to various furniture brands etc (which I love cos I’m a van geek!)

we have a 2014 VW T5 with 98k on the clock.
all good, happy with the van, except we would really like an L or U shape layout as opposed to the current rock and roll bed.

there are three options-
keep current layout and change van in a few years as planned.

keep current van but spend around £1.5 k to change layout, keep for a few years.

change van to slightly lower mileage one with desired layout- probably around £3k

id like to do option 3, but we’ve only had this van for a year so DH is understandably reluctant.

I’d go for option 3 with 98 on the clock.

All depends on how many miles you’re thinking of doing in the future. If you’re high milers, then option 3, but if you’ll only do a few 1000 a year then the cheaper option.

Thanks all, we use it as an occasional second car, and go away most weekends plus longer trips to Europe a couple of times a year.

so around 10k a year

@OnceIn @PersephoneParlormaid can you say more about why it’s dependent on mileage?

keep your current van for another season and really figure out the finer details - a U or L shape really impacts the kitchen area - would you move that to the back etc and then you'll know what you want:)

TrustedTheWrongFart · 22/09/2025 19:20

Do you ever use the back seats for passengers? U shapes don’t always come with seatbelts.

TrustedTheWrongFart · 22/09/2025 19:20

98k on the clock is nothing for a transporter.

Ohhh interesting thread, we also have a 14 plate with rock and roll bed. What's the back door like? We have a lift up door (not sure of the proper name!!) Would like to change the bed but dh uses the van as a work van too (he is a tradesman) and we do use the back seats for kids.

@knackeredmumoftwo should have said, this our second van. I should have been a bit more thoughtful before getting another rock&roll set up - we don’t use the back seats for passengers anymore as our kids have left home.
Also I really did my back in last summer so I can’t put the rock and roll bed back up on my own. Apparently the U shaped seats are much easier?
@glassof - we have barn doors, as opposed to a tailgate (lift up)
