Protected No Claims

I damaged my car accidentally. Looks like about £1500 of damage. I have about 10 years protected no claims but am still wary of claiming because of the impact on my renewal. Has anyone seen a big increase in insurance premiums following a claim when you have protected no claims?

I have protected no claims. I had a fault claim 2 years ago, and no significant increase - in fact I got a refund when we moved home earlier this year, as we moved to a cheaper area. I think I can have 3 claims before the protected NCB is affected.

In fact, I just double checked my policy, and before we moved it decreased by £100 on the previous year, which was the year of the claim!

It’s two claims before the % discount is affected, but there’s no protection against the base cost increasing.

eg, max NCB = 50% discount.
pre-accident base cost = £800
you pay £400

post-accident base cost = £1000
you pay £500

Just double checked mine and its 2 claims in a 3 year period, before the NCD is reduced. Glad I double checked!

And yes to the way you explained it, much better than I did. But in summary, I had a fault claim, no increase year after and a decrease the second year.
