Electric car

So the government want us all to be driving electric vehicles. I live in a terraced house with no driveway and no guarantee I will be able to park outside my own house.
My town of approx 30,000 people has 4 charging points!!! Thats it!! And currently 2 are out of order. I don't have charging at my work and the next available charging points are in the next town 12 miles away! How is this gonna work if we HAVE to have electric cars?

The Public charge points are also treble the price of charging at home too.

No idea how it will work tbh? We have recently gone electric but we do have a driveway but finding enough chargers that are available whilst away from
home does make me nervous.

Yep I love electric but I have a driveway and a home charger. Absolute ballache if you don’t - or don’t have a charge at work option

We’ve had electric cars since 2016, although we do have a driveway and home charger. We’ve had a couple of issues but no more than with the petrol car. Availability of charging has improved a lot in the last 10 yrs, so reasonable to assume it will improve further. If you don’t want one don’t get one.

Mind you, if I didn’t have a driveway I wouldn’t own a car at all.

Well it clearly won't work. Fast public charging is very expensive, they need to cut the VAT to make the cost cheaper.

It's not going to work unless they get cracking now and work together.
We're in an ex council estate. 200 homes with communal parking. I have grilled the council, county council, environment team, housing association, councillors and our MP a couple of times to see what the plans are to install all the necessary charging points. We'd need one in every parking space as people are wankers around here and won't share. No one in authority has a plan, they haven't even started to put their heads together. I am hoping to move before it becomes critical in 7/8yrs.

Unfortunately @Ilikewinter evidence from VAT cuts on other products (tampons etc) shows that cutting VAT has no effect on prices, it just puts more money in the shop/manufacturer’s hands.

There would also need to be some kind of price cap (eg % profit above supplier costs) but I can’t see that happening.

Even at high prices, though, it is similar cost per mile to petrol (but much cheaper overall to run electric if you mostly charge at home).

We are looking to get our first EV for our next car. It could be our last car as we are in our 70s and want one before some ailment stops us driving. We have a drive, and aim to get a home charger. First step this week will be switch to a smart meter. Next, trying to find out if we will need a new consumer unit to have a home charger installed. It is a pita trying to get the info from energy suppliers, but I shall persevere. I have.downloaded the Zapmap app which shows all the charging points when out and about. There are quite a lot locally. Every supermarket has chargers, from Aldi and Lidl upwards. Don't know how good any of them are. One out of town shopping centre has a bank of chargers which are powered by a big diesel generator, which seems to miss the point. Still we are going to take our time before we buy. Our gut feeling is to stick with the VW group as out last 2 cars have been Skoda and have both been v good cars. We rarely drive more than 100 miles a day, so will usually home charge, but are looking at a week or so touring Cornwall or Scotland so will be coming here for tips and sharing our experiences as
