New EV car tax rules

I'm confused. Can anyone explain whether the new tax will be due tomorrow - April 1st, or when your tax next comes up for renewal?

When it comes up for renewal. But until now ev have been zero rated if you renew today (irrespective of when your renewal date is) you will get a whole year still at zero rate. For example I registered ours in may last year. It was due for tax May 2025. I renewed a few days ago. Have nil rate of tax till March 2026. It’s worth it to ‘renew’ early. But you only have half an hour to do so. Hope you get it sorted!

Did it last week but it only gave me until 1st March 2026.

Just tried to log in there to get another free month and got a message saying website will be down until 2.30am on 1st April.

They're daft but not that daft.

That's because car tax starts from the beginning of the month in which you take it out, regardless of when in the month you do so. You couldn't have extended it any further.
