Velar or discovery sport?

Does anyone have a recommendation as to which of these is better? Both similar cars as far as ive researched - although interior of velar is much more premium. The price isn't much difference.

Also - I'm curious, what do people spend on their cars each month vs what they take home?

Neither.

We need less massive obnoxious cars on the roads, not more.

Cluelessbee · 31/01/2025 16:51

I agree with neither.

JoyousPinkPeer · 31/01/2025 16:55

Would not have a car made by JLR. They are one of the most unreliable cars ever. They are really bad for the environment also.

pinkpinkeverywhere · 31/01/2025 16:59

I'd say Velar, much more premium as a RR rather than Discovery brand.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 31/01/2025 17:17

After the JLR debacle and rebrand it wouldn't be that. Practically impossible to insure a Velar here.

Worrieaboutthebarbedwire · 31/01/2025 18:09

I'd be nervous about insuring it too, have you checked for your area? If I was forced to choose one it would be the discovery as I find the velar to look a bit naff. Not my thing though, I'm a small car person!

MyDadLovedBlondieToo · 31/01/2025 18:16

Out of the two, I’d buy a Discovery if that was the type of car I needed. The Velar looks vulgar, the Discovery suggests you actually might need to go off-road on occasion.

I would be very concerned about reliability and insurance with both of them though.

If you would have to pay monthly, I’d suggest you buy a cheaper car that you can afford outright.

woodymumoftwo · 31/01/2025 18:22

Awful cars. I think the people that drive them think very highly of themselves, I believe very unreliable too.

vickyq1983 · 31/01/2025 18:25

What a judgy mcjudgeface you are. I have a Discovery because I like the look of it. I don't think highly of myself in any way. In fact I have very low confidence and self esteem. What a bizarre comment to make.

InTheRainOnATrain · 31/01/2025 19:08

Neither!! JLR cars are badly made. Mine has been recalled 3 times in 4 years. The latest they were unable to complete because the part needed is on back order (despite 1000s of cars being affected) and just a shrug when I dared to ask when they might expect to have it but at least it’s driveable because on a previous recall they forget to update some software and it died whilst I was driving home. The insurance costs a fortune because they’re at such high risk of theft. Yes mine has been stolen too! At one point we had it insured via Land Rover themselves because no other company would touch it. One of the many recalls was supposed to have address that though and now we can use traditional insurer again, still so expensive though. The only reason I still have it because we buy outright new then keep for 10 years so with it being only 4 years old a new car isn’t something we’ve budgeted for and I really don’t want to commit to a finance agreement. Vaguely considering a Volvo though as you can get the xc60 on 0% if you put enough down!

woodymumoftwo · 31/01/2025 19:15

Why anyone would need such a big car? And I do think people think they are better than people who drive smaller cheaper cars. Hyacinth Bouquet comes to mind🤣🤣🤣🤣🙄

Roselilly36 · 31/01/2025 19:22

Check out insurance in your area before you purchase OP. DH had a LR Sport quite few years back, he was so disappointed with the build quality, wouldn’t ever buy another. But if it’s what you want, go for it.

HelloMrBond · 31/01/2025 19:27

Op, lots of fairly useless comments on here. We’ve had landrovers for many years but our last two (discovery and Range Rover) have both been far below par and we feel the brand has seriously lost way. They are the most fantastic cars when working, but they are so unreliable, we always bought new our last two both needed new engines 4.4L and a 3.0L before they hit 25k miles! Both the disco sport and velar use the 2.0L ingenium engine, which is a disaster (do some googling). We switched to an xc90 last year and have been thrilled. If your considering the smaller LR vehicles, I’d suggest looking at the xc40 or xc60, both great cars.

Lovelysummerdays · 31/01/2025 19:34

I used to drive landrovers at work a lot. The discovery sport sport had a low grade interior. The velar was a much nicer to drive. That said it was unpopular with guests as was limited in how much off roading it could do. They aren’t particularly reliable though, forever getting faults. I’d only get one if you have very deep pockets and love the car and no other would do.

HelplessSoul · 31/01/2025 20:42

Wouldnt touch either of these or any JLR product with a camels shitty stick.

I'd rather invest in a bus pass, walking or Uber.

Utterly unreliable, overpriced dogshit cars.

To be fair, a bus pass and uber wouldn't get you very far here and it'd be quite a walk to most places!

fiorentina · 31/01/2025 21:02

Definitely check you can get reasonable price insurance and think about the security aspects. Friends have definitely had issues insuring JLR vehicles the last few years in several areas, and sadly suffered thefts.

Legs are still more reliable than the tat JLR makes.

👍

I had an evoque a few years ago and loved it. DH has just got a velar hybrid as a company car (both of us have ‘off road’ jobs). He loves it so far, though it’s a bit bigger than I would go for - still prefer the evoque

anon3455 · 31/01/2025 22:00

I used to have an Evoque and loved it, then had a second DD and got the Velar- I love it. Great sized boot, loads of room in the back, even when two kids + DH + luggage and pram etc packed too. Feels really spacious and comfortable. I've never had any issues with reliability and certainly don't think 'highly of myself' and some very presumptuous posters have suggested Grin hope this helps!

Shade17 · 31/01/2025 22:25

Both epically shit. If you want a decent 4x4 buy a Land Cruiser.

I have a Disco Sport and I love it. It’s a lot smaller than a normal Disco but has cabin space to equal the Velar. It’s not too big to park comfortably, it’s actually shorter in length than my old estate and has sensors and cameras anyway. It’s lovely and comfy to drive, it’s economical to run, does 50mpg and is only £155 a year to tax. It has seven seats so can get all the family and friends in. It hasn’t had any problems and the service costs are on a par with any other premium brand. My insurance is about £600 a year although I live quite rurally.

I can’t say it makes me think any more highly of myself. It is a lovely car though and I’m grateful that I can afford it. Which I suspect might be why some people think it’s just showing off. Says more about them really.

I don't think anyone is showing off. I'm just sick of having bonnets that are higher than my head when I'm driving a normal sized hatchback. Sick of massive cars taking up ridiculous amounts of room on the road while guzzling fuel.

Velar or discovery sport?
lottyh · 31/01/2025 23:48

I have a disco sport which is absolutely amazing. I've just bought a new one and it's a pleasure to drive but had the old one 6 years. I have horses and keep them on an unadopted road so they go off roading every day and cope great. Good mpg but the diesel engine (like any brand) needs a good run as it doesn't cope well with short journeys. I am however currently driving a brand new Velar whilst my Disco is awaiting a part in the garage and I bloody love it. Similar size, mpg etc and copes with everything I throw at it including all the snow a few weeks ago. Technically they are very similar spec wise. I'd say the disco is a bit more rugged and depends on what you want them for. I've not towed with the Velar but the disco was a great tow vehicle. Whichever one you go for you won't be disappointed....fabulous vehicles. If you are doing short journeys each day I'd recommend a petrol one....not that many of them but they are fast!

My hatchback can do all of that too.
