Velar or discovery sport?

Does anyone have a recommendation as to which of these is better? Both similar cars as far as ive researched - although interior of velar is much more premium. The price isn't much difference.

Also - I'm curious, what do people spend on their cars each month vs what they take home?

Both lovely cars, I drive an Evoque at the moment but when the time comes to change I'm planning on a Velar.

Op, lots of fairly useless comments on here. We’ve had landrovers for many years but our last two (discovery and Range Rover) have both been far below par and we feel the brand has seriously lost way. They are the most fantastic cars when working, but they are so unreliable, we always bought new our last two both needed new engines 4.4L and a 3.0L before they hit 25k miles! Both the disco sport and velar use the 2.0L ingenium engine, which is a disaster (do some googling). We switched to an xc90 last year and have been thrilled. If your considering the smaller LR vehicles, I’d suggest looking at the xc40 or xc60, both great cars.

This is really helpful thank you. I do need a larger boot for work as have a lot of kit to carry around. Also two young children with car seats so like a decent size for them too.

Why are they obnoxious cars?

Did you see my photo?

I know that's not one of the cats mentioned but I'm fucking sick of it being my view while driving a normal hatchback!

That's helpful thank you, the evoque spec is lovely but isn't quite big enough for me with boot space

Get an estate.

I've actually just been looking online at a 20 plate octavia which is cheaper & decent boot

I will never understand Mumsnet hatred towards 4x4s and having a nice car. Most of these threads descend into a small version of chaos with many people making it clear they have no idea what an SUV or 4x4 actually is and that they have way too much investment in Doris' 2011 qashqai thinking she's killing the world one small child at a time.

Personally, if it was my own money, I would not be buying anything JLR. The build quality and reliability is simply not there. There are other brands such as Volvo that have it all. Too many engine and electrical problems including having to drive with no headlights at night as they simply wouldn't work. We have a lot of evoques on fleet and haven't had much issue but years ago we had more evoques off the road than on the road. These were brand new and leased so despite the hassle, we were put back on the road fairly quickly in another car.

SabrinaThwaite · 02/02/2025 08:42

Skoda Octavia and Superb, VW Golf, Audi A6 and the Merc E class estates all have a bigger boot space than the Velar, although smaller than the Disco.

babasaclover · 02/02/2025 08:53

Previous Range Rover owner here wanted one all my life and it completely smashed my heart to smithereens with how unreliable it was and the cost of even the minor repairs was eye watering. So upsetting cause when it did work it was the best car going.

Have you considered Lexus RX or RZ? They are so reliable as a brand, got that luxury feel inside and big boots.

Ignore all the prats on here saying about them being pretentious etc - usually just jealousy. If you work hard and want a nice car no harm there

babasaclover · 02/02/2025 08:54

Also have you considered leasing? Especially as it sounds like you have a company? Great business leases available

SybilEsmeGytha · 02/02/2025 09:54

Came back to say if its all about the boot space the Octavia is a great shout. I had a diesel VRS estate on PCP a few years ago and absolutely loved it, lots of fun and it was an absolute tardis. Could fit way more in it than in the a4 avant it replaced or the volvo v60 estate that came after. Did 50k miles over 3years and it only ever needed tires. Skoda superb estate is even bigger in the boot or the Kodiaq SUV if u need a 4x4. Hybrid versions on a business lease could be a great way to go.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 02/02/2025 10:00

Have you seen the reliability ratings for these cars? Both should make you think twice. And YY to theft, insurance.

It isn’t.

Velar is 568 litres behind the second row of seats.

Disco is 963 or 840 litres depending on 5 or 5 + 2 seat configuration.

The Disco boot capacity is only smaller if you have it set up with all 7 seats.

Just want to add to this. Even as a company car driver where it's not my money or my concern, I couldn't bring myself to order an evoque. Purely because of the reliability.

Colleague has an Octavia estate and the boot is about twice the size of my 3 series estate which is a similarly sized car. The Skoda is comfortable and there's nothing it can't do.

I feel if you can't afford to buy it then you should just get a cheaper car- upping the budget and paying monthly doesn't make sense.

There's a huge difference to buying a car outright & paying for one monthly - the difference is having a car & not having one!!

Typical miserable MN! We’ve had Land Rovers for years, always been great. We’ve had Discoveries, Defenders and I now have a full sized RR hybrid. It’s fab and I love it. I bought it with my own money, it’s hybrid so not a “gas guzzler”, I had no problems insuring it.
Zero public transport or Ubers where I live, nor can you walk anywhere. I need a big car for my job and life and in the recent floods? It was me who took my elderly neighbour to her doctors appointment because no one else could get through. Also used our defender to tow out a young lad who got stuck in the floods in his tiny car.

Yes lots of disgruntled people for sure! Having no car isn't an option with two young children & a business that relies on me travelling...if only I could get hold of a horse & cart on 2025. Thanks for your advice & sharing your valuable knowledge.

For what it's worth I have had 4x4s for a few years now and can't ever imagine going back to a smaller car. I upgraded to a pickup truck last year and I love it! I do need it - I've got horses and they're kept in a fairly remote location and I've been grateful for the 4X4 when it's been snowing in the winter so that I can get to them, and I also need a big car so that I can tow them around and carry lots of stuff in the boot.

But there's no way that I'd be buying anything Land Rover/Range Rover due to what I've heard about reliability. I've driven Ssangyongs for a few years now with hardly any issues and can recommend them, they're pretty budget friendly too!

@Whenlifegiveslemons if that's the case then why buy such an expensive car?

I'm looking at second hand with mid range mileage, I need a decent size as two young children so two car seats, a pram & do need a decent boot for work. I a car with space inside for the kids. What I'm looking at isn't out of my budget.

We have a discovery sport which we bought when it was 4 years old. We've had it another 5 years now and had no problems with it at all 🤷‍♀️

Mumsnet really hates 4x4s 🤣

That's so good to hear - thank you! I guess, as with all cars - some may experience issues. I've currently got a Renault & NEVER again, awful car to drive. But I think you're right...MN does NOT like evil 4×4s 😆
