Does anyone have a recommendation as to which of these is better? Both similar cars as far as ive researched - although interior of velar is much more premium. The price isn't much difference.

Also - I'm curious, what do people spend on their cars each month vs what they take home?

I don't think anyone is showing off. I'm just sick of having bonnets that are higher than my head when I'm driving a normal sized hatchback. Sick of massive cars taking up ridiculous amounts of room on the road while guzzling fuel.

Yes it’s such a pain having to share the road with so many larger vehicles. Vans, trucks, ambulances, lorries, they’re such a nuisance to everyone in a tiny car.

Vans, trucks and ambulances have a purpose. Massive cars don't, apart from making the road more dangerous for other drivers.

Fluff111 · 01/02/2025 00:48

OP - FFS ignore 99% of jealous comments on here. I’ve had an evoque and a velar. The velar was outstanding, I loved everything about it. No mechanical issues, felt so safe on motorways. I wouldn’t hesitate buying another.

Sounds more like shit drivers/driving - big cars dont make danger for other cars or road users.

Shit drivers are dangerous.

If a person who drives is intimidated by big (or any other) vehicles, they should hand their licence in and get the fuck off the road. That improves road safety for all!

pjparty · 01/02/2025 02:59

I feel if you can't afford to buy it then you should just get a cheaper car- upping the budget and paying monthly doesn't make sense.

EmilyEmmabob · 01/02/2025 08:38

Both look lovely, they are fairly similar but with the added luxury in the Velar. Some of the comments on here are judgemental but unfortunately very true in a lot of cases. Make sure you can afford the servicing costs for whichever one you choose, and be aware that when they go wrong (frequently) JLR are notoriously difficult to get parts from and very expensive. The aftermarket parts for them often don't fit and once your vehicle is stripped down for a repair you are often left with no choice but to use genuine parts as a huge cost. The software in both of these vehicles can often only be managed by JLR, even down to reprogramming when simple parts are replaced which is unlike other brands of cars.
JLR have taken a massive nose dive, I wouldn't bother at the moment but if it's the brand you like then just be aware of those things. You might be lucky and get one that's reliable - I'd go for the Velar. Or a different brand.

Whydoyoucarewhatido · 01/02/2025 08:51

Typical miserable MN! We’ve had Land Rovers for years, always been great. We’ve had Discoveries, Defenders and I now have a full sized RR hybrid. It’s fab and I love it. I bought it with my own money, it’s hybrid so not a “gas guzzler”, I had no problems insuring it.
Zero public transport or Ubers where I live, nor can you walk anywhere. I need a big car for my job and life and in the recent floods? It was me who took my elderly neighbour to her doctors appointment because no one else could get through. Also used our defender to tow out a young lad who got stuck in the floods in his tiny car.

ImWearingPantaloons · 01/02/2025 09:08

I wouldn't have either, neither are that reliable these days

Sherararara · 01/02/2025 09:12

I bought a Discovery for many reasons but the main one being to come on MN and wind up the anti-SUV crowd.

SybilEsmeGytha · 01/02/2025 12:42

If you are very wealthy, don't need to worry about depreciation, poor reliability, insurance costs and theft risk, the Velar would be my choice for comfort luxury and driving experience. Discovery if you do any regular off reading.

If you're a medium to high earning household without lots of spare fun money floating around every month to spare on a high PCP payment for a sub par super high depreciation product I'd think again and I agree with previous poster recommendations to take a look at an xc60 ir xc90. I'd even look at a BMW or VAG group SUV over and above JLR .

That ^^

I work for JLR and don't drive one unless it's one I've taken home from work

Recalls are normal but that's the same with anything, my washing machine had one, my none JLR car had one, it's catching issues and doing free repairs/updates before issues start

But I don't think they're reliable

QuestionableMouse · 01/02/2025 00:08

My hatchback can do all of that too.

What, tow a horse box?

SybilEsmeGytha · 01/02/2025 13:00

In answer to you other question there are no monthly car payments in my house hold currently. We own both cars outright 7 Yr old high spec VW originally new on pcp and paid balloon payment in 2021, and 3.5 Yr old Cupra bought outright at 2.5yrs old.

Before our salaries increased and allowed us to accumulate savings quite quickly to buy a decent (in our case sporty, fun and comfortable) cars outright we did both have cars on PCP for a period. Our combined payments didn't exceed 10% of our take home pay and we budgeted to allow the same amount to be saved monthly. That budget shifted up from around £500 per month to £700 per month over a 5yr period.

I love driving a fast safe reliable engaging car but I also prioritise holidays, experiences and paying my mortgage down so have chosen not to get as much car as i could on pcp and keep my consumer debt low. On paper I could easily get the turquoise blue porsche I fancy on PCP but will only consider that if I've paid my mortgage off! 😂

Whenlifegiveslemons · 02/02/2025 06:59

QuestionableMouse · 31/01/2025 16:38

Neither.

We need less massive obnoxious cars on the roads, not more.

Why are they obnoxious cars?

Thanks for your reply, it's helpful and sensible. I totally get your reasoning to not wanting debt - I'm the same, but I do need a certain size car for my business & by default that seems to be a handful of cars. Although now weighing up other options to allow more holiday fund - that's always my priority!

I'd say Velar, much more premium as a RR rather than Discovery brand.

Thanks for your helpful reply (unlike others 😆)

After the JLR debacle and rebrand it wouldn't be that. Practically impossible to insure a Velar here.

I've got a few insurance quotes & it's around £900 a month for a velar - that's about £400 more than a skoda, over 12 months I don't think that's too bad?

Worrieaboutthebarbedwire · 31/01/2025 18:09

I'd be nervous about insuring it too, have you checked for your area? If I was forced to choose one it would be the discovery as I find the velar to look a bit naff. Not my thing though, I'm a small car person!

Yes I have searched for quotes for both & both similar in insurance price (around £100 difference). I do need a bigger car & decent boot size for work as use it for transporting a lot of kit. I also quite like a "bigger" car currently have a Renault koleos & it's the worst car, awful to drive - so need to get rid asap.

OP posts:
Moonlamp · 02/02/2025 07:09

Christ, neither.

You never truly 'own' a JLR. You just look after it in between the rare times it's not in the workshop.

Get the best warranty money can buy. Honestly.

Whenlifegiveslemons · 02/02/2025 07:10

MyDadLovedBlondieToo · 31/01/2025 18:16

Out of the two, I’d buy a Discovery if that was the type of car I needed. The Velar looks vulgar, the Discovery suggests you actually might need to go off-road on occasion.

I would be very concerned about reliability and insurance with both of them though.

If you would have to pay monthly, I’d suggest you buy a cheaper car that you can afford outright.

Thanks for replying. I'd love to buy outright but I don't have the funds unfortunately. I need to look in to reliability of these cars more - I know there was issue with velar a few years ago. The car I currently have (renault, koleos) is really poor, few technical issues that keep re-occuring & it feels like driving a tin can. Need to get rid so I can enjoy driving again.

OP posts:
Whenlifegiveslemons · 02/02/2025 07:12

I'd have said the same some time ago but I do really like the specs & do think when buying wither second hand, you get a lot for your money.

You know what they say - if you want to go into the desert take a Land Rover, if you want to come back again take a Toyota.

Whenlifegiveslemons · 02/02/2025 07:15

This is most certainly the most helpful comment on here - thank you! What a nightmare?! The thought of having my car fail while driving (I've got two small children) would be a deal breaker for me

I've got a similar issue with my current renault, have only had 18 months but it's cost me money with issues so I'm prepared to cut my losses for fear of future further issuesm

cyclingmum67 · 02/02/2025 07:15

Go for something more reliable: one od Q5, GLC or X3 would be my choice.

I had an F-Pace - brilliant car until it's turbocharger blew up and then was odd the road for 4 months waiting for JLR to source the parts to fix it.
