Hi, I had a telephone call with universal credit about work November 16th which I told them I already work part time i care for my partner and I have 2 young boys the youngest being 1 he said I have enough going on and I can’t be expected to look for more as I'm doing enough already , he asked have I looked into carers element so I said I didn’t know it was a thing and he also asked is my partner getting any disability benefit I stated that he gets pip and it went though a long process of applying for pip in march 2022 being declined twice and it went through tribunal and I sent further medical evidence to dwp to which they changed their mind before it got back to tribunal and awarded my partner pip enhanced daily living and mobility in September 2023. They backdated this to march 2022 he then uploaded some documents onto my journal for me to have a read to see if I was eligible it turns out I was eligible and I applied for carers element It was included in my next statement In December, I then asked December 21st after if I could have it backdated then they got back to me on the 8th of Jan stating they’ve sent my request for backdate to the DM , does anyone know how long this would take and what’s the likelihood of having it backdated when would they backdate it too? As they told me to write the date pip backdated my partners money too( march 2022) on the change of circumstances ‘ when you started caring for this person’

Hi I had something similar on my journal on Tuesday this week. Had a message to log on to my journal, and there was a message telling me to apply for carers element. So I called up and I’ve not been receiving it and I could be backdated back until 01/01/2022.

If you have been caring for your partner since he was awarded PIP then it should be backdated to march 2022. I have successfully got it backdated for a client for 18 months backdated.

All in all it took around 2 weeks, but the moment they wrote in the journal the money was in within 10 minutes good luck xx

How long does it take them make a decision on backdate on carers element after verification which was 10th they verified it just wondering as it like over year they owe

Livvyloux · 20/07/2024 09:31

Did it take 2 weeks like in working days for backdate decision or actual 2 weeks ? X

I applied for backpay of the carers element of UC (which I was unaware of until recently when I read about it on a forum) 4 months ago. After numerous journal entries and a complaint I received a message today saying the decision maker has closed my case as there is no arrears of carers element due.
I've been in receipt of UC since October 2019 and have been carers of my son since birth so I can't understand why there's no arrears due. I was successful in receiving backpay for the disability element.
I would be so grateful for advice on what I should do. Can I appeal, and if so how?

Hi, did you ever get a response to this? I'm in the same position myself! I've been getting MRC for my son for a few years now. I started claiming UC in July and got the disability benefit. I had no idea about the carers element until I saw this in forums. I notified UC of the change and that I am a carer for a disabled child and they have refused to backdate the carers element amount!!
