Carers bus pass

Do carers get concessionary bus passes where you live?

I'm in the south east and don't think you do here? Seems strange when you can travel for free with the person you care for.

Carers can apply for a concession for free or reduced travel in the UK if they accompany someone with a disability who has an exemption card.

Where I live the concession is linked to the main cardholder's card only, so you only get the benefit when they are travelling themselves.

The person with a disability has a stripe down the side of their bus pass that means they can have someone accompany them free. But it can be a different person every time.

The concession is to enable the disabled person to travel, not to give the carer free travel.

I've only ever known it linked to and when accompanying a person with a disability who requires a carer (it's a 'plus one' to their card)

Yes that's how it works where I live but carers allowance is so low and frequently the person you are caring for is not well enough to go out.

£4.50 bus fare each time is a lot out of 64 ish a week.

Maybe there are other discounts available but you cannot use a carers card if you are not with the person you are caring for

MayThePawsBeWithYou · 30/01/2022 14:28

Are you claiming uc or meet other criteria for discounted travel

TowandaForever I'm guessing every aspect of life is hard if you are an unpaid carer relying on benefits. Have you sought advice to make sure you are receiving everything you are entitled to?
