I think you continue to get payments for 3 months when you stop caring for someone, Im not sure if that's just in the case of bereavement or not, but might be worth checking in case?

how strange. I cancelled online and it stopped pretty much straight away.

CornishTiger · 04/10/2020 16:37

Did the person die? You get a 8 week run on.

I’d actually involve MP. An MP enquiry will get it stopped!

Carers allowance advised it was their error and any monies received wasn't to be paid back due to their error. I changed to universal credit a week before I finally got it sorted and universal credit took the money off me and left me with 270 to live on last month with a child I was furious but they wouldn't budge

I’m currently experiencing the very same thing, I’ve called in the phone and the lady confirmed that my caters allowance was ended yet I was still getting paid then I took to their website and 3-4 times I’ve cancelled it yet still get paid, and I don’t want to pay anyone back for their error

Hi

I'm in the same position as you. I called twice to cancel yet still receiving payments. Just wandering how things have developed with you? Have u been asked to pay it back?

Etihad · 03/11/2022 06:59

Yes I had this too, it look about 4 months to finally get it to stop.

Hey, yeah they got back to me, I started a new job and cancelled the carets allowance 3 weeks after, they said I only had to pay back the 3 weeks that I was getting paid since starting the job, the rest didn’t need to paid back, at the end I owed them 209.10 and just received my confirmation letter showing that it’s all paid off

Suz555 · 03/11/2022 16:19

Hi thanks for your reply.

So do you mean they didn't take back what was paid in error ?

Suz

Suz555 · 03/11/2022 16:20

Hi did they ask you to pay it back?

Hi,
I filled online form and rang DWP numereous time that I no longer care for my husband. He went into carehome. But I still get career allowance. Has anyone experienced the same ? I do not want to receive letter saying I owes them money.

Me too, and it's really stressing me out.
I cared for my dad, but he went into a care home, so I cancelled my claim online in December. Got acknowledgement that i need do nothing more.
I am STill receiving it every month.
I report online after every payment.
I rang them twice.
I sent a letter recorded delivery.

I am so stressed about it now, but don't know what else to do

This is happening to thousands of people who cancel the allowance but dwp continue to pay. Last winter pensioners had there heating allowance withdrawn to save money Yet the dwp are constantly paying our carers allowance after the recipient has CANCELLED THE BENEFIT. Eventually they contact the recipient and demand tie money is paid back which very often involves thousands of pounds. The situation needs to be reported to the tabloids.

I have a small part time job where I get paid differently every month, it is always under the carers allowance limit apart from once, I phoned constantly and told them having phoned every month with how much I earned. It has now been suspended without prior knowledge for the last 4 weeks, I phoned and it is with the decision maker, I was told that I don't need to pay back for when I earned too much, now I am being told that I do. They really don't know what they are doing. I am now in the process of taking the matter further. Why should I pay it back when it wasn't my fault?
