Can anyone recommend a good nursing home in Glasgow or north of the city?

Not strictly a sandwich question, as it's for my Gran rather than my parents - maybe I'm in the Club Sandwich generation with that extra layer! Anyway, my Gran is in her late 80s and she really needs residential care now. I'd like some recommendations or even places not to visit before I start trawling through the phone book. Also, what should I be looking for? Can anyone help?

Mrs Muddle, UnquietDad has started a similar thread - you were even juxtaposed before I added this! Hope you can pool advice and anything you find out... As with the other thread, I'd recommend a phone call to your local Age Concern - they have offices in most towns.

Here's the other thread.

Not sure if this is too far out for you but my grandfather was at this home for years - beautiful setting in an old castle and they looked after him really well.

Staff were all lovely and they did have various activities that he could get involved in if he wished.

Dalmoak Nursing Home Ltd
Dalmoak Castle, Dumbarton

It is situation just off the A82 not far from Loch Lomond.

Thanks, you two. I'll look at Unquiet Dad's post, Fauve. Sisterof..., it's a wee bit far out, but I'll keep it on my reserve list if I can't find anything nearer. Thanks.

can I just say a very good guide when checking out a nursing home is to literally follow your nose.Stand your ground and have a good sniff. If there is a smell of stale urine hanging in the air move on and look elsewhere. It's a sure sign that elderly residents are not being assisted to the loo when required or being washed and changed after episodes of incontinence.I say this as a nurse with many years of experience in elderly care. It's a much more important factor than decor, soft furnishings or smarmy chat from the home manager etc.Good luck in your search
