Car seats for sloped seats in car

Hi, I am due to have my first child this summer. Didn’t realise car seats were such a minefield! We have just ordered a cybex cloud z with the base for our 2019 VW polo, although the backseats have isofix holes and per cybex website our car is compatible I’m concerned that with our back seats being sloped it may be an issue.

Spoke to mamas and papas employee who said basically we would have the same issue with any car seat, but that it’s not an issue as long as it is installed correctly and the baby is correctly strapped in, but still just concerned that the babies head may drop forward and thought surely this may be a common issue as quite a lot of cars have sloped seats in the back!?

Also in a Polo of similar age. We got the two above and used that until 15 months. We tried out loads of different seats in the car ( John Lewis fitting service) and because of the 7 position recline this definitely worked best. She was born at 5lb 15oz so small and we are glad we got something flatter.

I had this issue with the car I had with my first born. I went in to get the car seat I wanted but my seats are slopped so couldn't get it. They recommended the Joie I level car seat as it's practically lay flat. I loved it and looked so comfortable for the baby.

As you’ve said the main problem with sloped seats is head flop which is dangerous for young babies. Seat belt installation usually allows for more recline as it’s not as rigid as isofix so could be an option if you’re not happy with the angle of the Cloud Z base?

Alternatively as PP mentioned, the joie i-level has more recline so may be better. There is also the nuna arra and maxi Cosi marble that can also recline so might be of use

The Britax babysafe i-size (babysafe I-size 2/3 unsure and rather underwhelmed/disappointed about the new modular isense being able to do so) with the flex base has an angle adjuster so is good for sloped seats as it keeps the seat flat regardless. For the next stage seat (or if you want one from birth) the BeSafe izi-twist is a spin seat that counteracts the sloping of seats making for better installation

Thank you - we ordered the cybex cloud z this weekend (maybe jumped the gun) as also looking for one preferably that is compatible with our pram (bugaboo lynx) so thinking may wait until it arrives, install it then possibly ask someone in a store to see what the think of it once in the car!

Unless anyone has already tried it and knows it isn’t a great combination! (Cloud z and polo)

It's just a case of trying it to see unfortunately.

There aren't a huge amount of Maxi Cosi adapter compatible newborn seats which have the flexible angle bases. Only the Joie ones and people sometimes find the shape of the seat itself non idea for those seats.

The best way to check the angle is install it and then measure the angle your baby would be lying at. No steeper than 40 degrees from flat is recommended for newborns.

No experience of Polo and Cloud Z but as Bertie said joie seats will be compatible with your pram using the maxi Cosi. There’s also BeSafe, nuna, cybex (as you already know) and GB if the cloud doesn’t have a good fit in your car. From what I can tell, the Fox and Lynx use the same car seat adaptors (alongside the buffalo) and there are Britax adaptors available for the Fox so it should work on the lynx.

In the MadeForMums review of the Cloud Z they used it in a golf with a newborn and it was fine

The honest John list just looks at the car seat manufacturer's fit list, it doesn't tell you what the angle will be like in the car.

We have the cybex cloud and the sirona. The cloud is great for putting on the buggy because you can lay them flat without waking. The sirona tilts backwards though if that’s a concern.
