Car seats

3 car seats in the back of a Qashqai?

Hi, currently I drive a Renault Clio (2015) with my 5 year old (who sits in a simple booster death) and 2 year old who sits in a regular infant car seat.

We're now expecting baba #3 and realised there's absolutely no way we can fit another child in the back of our Clio! I really, really like the look of the Qashqai (2018 model), and according to my father it's a lot bigger than a Clio (I take that with a pinch of salt as he likes to pretend he knows everything about cars 😂). I'm just wondering if there's any way I would fit 2 infant car seats a booster seat in the back of one?

I know a bigger car like a Galaxy/Picasso is best but I'm not a fan of 7 seaters

I very much doubt it. There is very little room in the back. Three adults is nearly impossible. The middle seat is very narrow.

Have a look at one for yourself but I doubt it. We hired one on holiday a while back and found it really cramped. Like a reverse Tardis - smaller on the inside! DH didn’t find it nice to drive either.

Mallowmarshmallow · 19/04/2021 21:56

Not a chance. We have two high backed boosters for older children and can't even squeeze an old fashioned booster seat or a slim bottomed adult in between.

Also, the angle of the seatbelts in the back is the absolute bane of my life since both children now struggle to do this own seatbelts up and it's incredibly difficult due to the angle to do from the outside without the door being wide open (tricky in car parks....!)

You need a 7 seater XTrail! We've got one due to our third arriving 3 months ago, can fit everyone in!

Speak to the InCar safety centre. They’re good at knowing combos that fit.

We had a Doblo (ugliest car ever, but was so practical) and they were able to recommend a combo that worked.

I have a Kia Sportage which I love but I think it's a similar size. I can fit 3 adults but 2 adults and a car seat is a squeeze. I wouldn't fit 3 seats across I don't think. I could possibly do 2 car seats and an adult and put the other car seat in the front but I would depend on the age of the children and how upright the seats would be.

We managed three seats across the back of a dacia sandero. We now have a 7 seater though so they can spread out a bit.

Habbyhadno · 19/04/2021 22:25

Nope, we have three kids and a Qashqai there's not much room when you have two car seats in there, not a chance - sorry! We have to take two cars on family outings now.

Habbyhadno · 19/04/2021 22:26

There's a HUGE gap in the market for family cars where you can fit three across the back seat

ohidoliketobe · 19/04/2021 22:30

DC3 due any day.
After a lot of research on which cars can safely take 3 seats across the middle row (rather than reverting to fold away 3rd row which eats eats into boot and therefore pram/storage space), and keeping an SUV style rather than MPV, we've gone for a Peugeot 5008.
Had it just over a month now, so far so good. Trialled 3 seats in the back with no issues, DC1&2 are 7 and 5 and in high backed boosters.

BertieBotts · 19/04/2021 22:35

Oh the Squashqai? The Quashqai is referred to by car seat fitters as the "Reverse TARDIS" - it's a lot smaller on the inside!

Peugeot 5008 is indeed great. It's what we would have swapped our car for if DC3 turned out to be twins. As it is DS1 is old enough to need no car seat and thankfully is quite skinny so I'm going to play around with seats in our 3008 to see if I can find a combo that is comfortable for him.

This list may be useful as well although it's not complete (they never are) - it's broken into two halves.

I don't know if you can get 3 car seats in the back as my kids are too old for that now. What I do know thouhh, is that it is severely under powered. It is a heavy car (SUV) with a tiny engine. It seriously lacked power and pulling away ability. I got rid of mine as soon as I could.

Atla · 19/04/2021 22:38

3 kids here - there's hardly any bloody cars where you can fit 3 seats across back. Try renault scenic/grand scenic, peugeot 5008, ford galaxy.

You have to be careful about the style of seat you buy as well, high backed boosters can be really wide at the top.

We used to have a scenic and then a grand scenic which both fit 3 seats of varying combo's (rear facing baby seat/isofix forward facing/booster) but it was a squeeze.

Atla · 19/04/2021 22:43

We have a 3008 now ds1 is old/tall enough not to need a car seat - similar size to quashqai I think and you definitely couldn't get 3 car seats in.

BertieBotts · 19/04/2021 22:46

I reckon you could get 3 in the 3008 with the right combination of seats, but it would need to be 3 slimmer seats and you probably couldn't use isofix ones (maybe one of the three).

One good thing about the Peugeots at least the new models is that the floor in the back is flat, so no hump to be uncomfortable for a child in the middle, and the front seat also has isofix so you can put a child seat there if you need to.

flossletsfloss · 19/04/2021 22:53

I second the Peugeot 5008 we can fit three car seats easily across the back of ours. We did a fair bit of research into this and our car seats are big reverse for longer seats.

worriedatthemoment · 19/04/2021 22:56

We have 2014 quashquai and not sure 3 seats would work
Years ago we had a scenic when they used ti actually do three full seats and think Picasso did the same and you could get 3 seats in , not sure any make the like that now and most seem to go 7 seater

idontlikealdi · 20/04/2021 07:02

No it won't work the qashqai is stupidly small in the back

Clockspanner · 02/06/2021 10:35

I posted this exact query last year and can confirm it is a no go. Currently I drive with my 2 eldest in the back and newborn in the front with the air bag off. When we go out as a whole family I squish in the back and my husband has to drive. Its not very comfortable. And in any case the 2014-18 model (don't know about the others) doesn't actually let you have a car seat on the middle seat according to the manual. I am so envious of anyone getting the new 5008 it looks amazing!
