Safest seat for a 20kg, 119cm 5yo?

The buckle on DS's car seat has broken, he is using a booster at the with the car seat belt but I don't think he's really big enough for that and would prefer him in a harness I think. Any ideas for the safest, reasonably priced option?

Britax advansafix will ff to 25kg with harness. Other than that the only options at his weight are extended rear facing seats, look on the in car safety centre website to see what goes up to 25kg but if he has been forward facing in a booster it might be hard to go back to rear facing in a harness seat at that age. Id say advansafix is best bet, failing that a good high back booster.

QueenMartha · 02/01/2015 15:51

Britax advansafix. I feel like I'm always singing this car seats praises on here. I love it. Maybe not reasonably priced but it turns into a high back booster at 18kg although the five point harness goes up to 25kg so I wouldn't use the seatbelt until after that.

Thanks, I've just had a look and the Britax one is £220! I don't have that much money. I think a high back booster is what I'm after, which do you think are the best options?

Have you had your DC in a normal Group 1 car seat until the buckle broke OP? Is he not too tall for that kind of seat and also, the harness on a group 1 (5 point ones) are only suitable to 18kg. Interesting about the Britax one PP's talk of. My 3 yo DS is 17kg and obviously heading out of a group 1 and the harness (he is tall too) and seems young for a high back booster

dementedpixie · 02/01/2015 15:56

I don't know if its worth buying a harnessed seat for that age of child and he is plenty heavy enough for a high backed booster seat.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 02/01/2015 15:56

Even a HBB at that weight will need to be a car seatbelt, rather than a harness.

mamababa · 02/01/2015 15:57

We have a Britax Evolva 1-2-3 and it's pretty good as a high back booster. Think it was around £100 but that's 5 years ago for older DC!

katandkits · 02/01/2015 15:58

The britax isofix one looks quite good, is it called kidfix or something like that? Again, the in car safety cente website will show you some options, they stock the better rated seats for older kids. If you don't want isofix there is britax adventure or joie trillo that aren't expensive. Steer clear of the graco junior maxi.

dementedpixie · 02/01/2015 15:58

we used a maxi cosi rodi xr but dont think they make that one now. Maxi cosi rodi air protect maybe?

RayBloodyPurchase · 02/01/2015 16:09

He was in a kiddicare high back booster with a 5 point harness, I didn't realise until this thread there was a difference between a 'car seat' and a 'high back booster'. We don't have an isofix base.
So a regular seat belt is safe enough for his height and weight?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 02/01/2015 16:12

yes high backed boosters secured with the car seat belt rather than a harness are ok from 15kg (preferably 18kg) and from around the age of 4ish (depends on the weight if the child really).

dementedpixie · 02/01/2015 16:13

p.s. he was probably too heavy for the harness anyway as most only go up to 18kg

RayBloodyPurchase · 02/01/2015 16:18

This is the one that broke, it says 9-36kg?

OP posts:
RayBloodyPurchase · 02/01/2015 16:19

I think I'm going to get this one
Thanks for the advice, I really appreciate it!

OP its up to 36kg as a high back booster. You are supposed to remove the harness after a certain weight.

Which means you could take the harness out and use it as a HBB.

dementedpixie · 02/01/2015 16:23

the harness is supposed to be removed at 18kg at which point it can be used as a high backed booster. I dont think you need a new seat, you just need to remove the harness.

From the kiddicare page:

As your child gets older, this car seat transforms into a high back booster seat, making this perfect for those fast growing kids. A lightweight frame makes this easy to switch between cars and the removable covers are hand washable and simple to take on and off.

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 02/01/2015 16:25

1-2-3 seats with harness up to 18kg.
18kg - 36kg - no harness, use the seatbelt.

x post Grin

Super! You've just saved me money, thanks Grin

QueenMartha · 02/01/2015 16:29

The first one you've linked to, it's 9-36kg because the 5 point harness will do from 9kg-18kg and the seat belt can be used from 15kg-36kg. Most seats can only be used until 18kg with the five point harness.

QueenMartha · 02/01/2015 16:30

X post with a few people there!

ThinkIveBeenHacked · 02/01/2015 16:36

Hehe Im sorry OP but the image of you trying to shoe horn a 10yo into the harness made me smile.

katandkits · 02/01/2015 16:52

If you had money you were able to spend on a seat, consider getting a new one anyway. A britax, maxi cosi or joie booster with better side impact protection than kiddicare own brand would offer a higher level of safety. You will be using it for perhaps 5 years so it is worth getting a decent one. If that isn't an option then yes, you can just use the current seat with no harness.

RayBloodyPurchase · 02/01/2015 22:04

I've read some bad reveiws and discussed it with DH now, we're going to replace the seat we have. Which is the best high back booster for under £100?

OP posts:
mamababa · 02/01/2015 22:29

I don't know what the best is but I tend to go for Britax or maxi cosi in any car seat.

We bought the Britax Evolva 123 for DS1 who used it as a group 1 with harness and then as HBB. DS 2 is in it now and it's very sturdy looking compared to our 'spare' HBB (a graco). I just did. Quick Google and Halfords have it on offer at £79.99. Can't link sorry but just go to Halfords website or Google will help x
