Forward facing car seat in front seat with airbag?

Hi
I have a question whether anyone knows the legal requirements and safety rules on a forward facing car seat placed into the front seat of a Mercedes with airbags? The car has only two front seats and at the back there wouldn't be enough space to fit a car seat. It's basically grandmas car who would only drive my daughter once a week or in emergencies. I read on a website that it would be ok as long as the seat is put as far backwards as possible. However, would like some opinion before buying a car seat. Any advice would be great! Thanks

I don't know what the legal position is but I had a Nissan Micra convertible with and used to switch the passenger airbag off (there was a switch!) when my ds was in the front seat in a car seat - when he was older and on a booster seat I used to put the seat as far back as possible.

from child car seat website:

If you must fit a forward-facing seat in the front, make sure that the car seat is as far back as it will go so your child is as far away from the dashboard as possible. Double check that the child seat is very securely held by the seat belt and your child is securely held by the child seat's integral harness (if fitted).
