Was reading something on facebook earlier about how coats on children in carseats is dangerous.. please can someone point me in the right direction as to why?

The padding coats means the belt isn't always tight enough/in right position and child can be injured/thrown out.

Haitch - thanks, can they still be safe if belt is pulled tight (tend to pull very tight)

If you put the coat on, do up the belt to your normal tightness, unclip without loosening the straps, remove child's coat then redo clips. How much gap is there between the straps and child? Is it as tight as if you had done it without the coat? Any gap that is more than the child in normal clothing is dangerous. in an impact the fabric will compact totally leaving a dangerous gap.

I tend to pull it tight so that the coat is completely squished and there is a gap to fit a finger at a squeeze between baby and strap

My thought is - it takes 30 seconds to remove a coat so why risk the child's safety by taking the risk it could have an effect?

I always take DD's coat off after seeing a similar a few months ago. Makes sense.

Don't know how old your LO is, but Car seat Poncho's are great for keeping them warm in their carseats :)

We always remove coats unless they are light weight non padded kinds (like a denim jacket or canvas coat). I also always remove waterproofs as they are slippery

We keep plenty of blankets in the car and they can always have their coats on their laps if needed too.
