Silver cross ventura plus car seat - baby too big????

I have a 4-month-old weighing 14lbs 7oz at last weigh in a week ago. We have a Ventura plus car seat (up to 13kg apparently?!)

Our problem:
When we put him in it, the shoulder straps are sitting on his shoulders and on the highest loop through. The pamphlet says that when baby's shoulders sit above the loop through, it becomes dangerous/doesn't fit properly. The thing is, on the back of the seat, there is clearly THREE loop holes but the highest one has not been cut through. Has anyone else found this to be the case? We're considering cutting through the polystyrene to create a higher loop hole.

Also the seat narrows towards the top and I'm finding that my baby's shoulders are becoming squashed and this will obviously worsen as he grows. Anyone else found this problem? I have read it's 'okay' as long as head doesn't go over the top?!? My problem is that it cannot be comfortable to be squished.

These are presenting problems for our holiday to Madeira. We were going to take the car seat and chassis and use it as a car seat/pushchair whilst away. He will be 7 months old when we go. I am concerned that he won't fit and don't want him uncomfortable in a warm climate. At the moment he is fine in it and doesn't moan or groan.

What does everyone else think I should do?

  1. Continue to use the car seat until he 'outgrows' it (i.e. head reaches top)?
  2. Change the car seat thus thinking of an alternative pushchair/car seat for our holiday?

We need a car seat to access hotel transport otherwise it's a private taxi and I am not sure in Jet2 (or taxi firm) can accommodate a big pram/pushchair top with chasis. In fact, I know they can't - not with luggage as well!!!

how many sets of holes are there in the fabric cover? 2 or 3?

if there are 3 sets in the plastic part of the seat, and 3 sets in the cover I'd be tempted to take it back to where you purchased it and ask if it's correct and if it ought to have another set of holes through the polystyrene

i would not cut the polystyrene myself

I would keep him in the seat until he outgrows it personally, although he may outgrow it before you need it for the holiday anyway? in which case I would just buy a cheap stroller to take with you

We've just purchased another stroller and car seat. The car seat has THREE holes and clearly will accommodate Will until he is probably nearer the 13kg mark. This is reassuring as I would like him to be rear facing as long as possible. I cannot buy the rear facing car seats to the age of 4 because I have a 3 door car and it will be difficult getting a toddler in and out of it!

Thanks for the advice. Oh, by the way the silvercross was second hand (reputable seller!) so can't take it back and my friend bought one and hers is the same. Silver Cross Ventura is NOT very comfortable and obviously won't take a baby up to 13kg unless you want your child squashed and choked!

I have the ventura plus, you can move the straps higher. Its not immediatly obvious, but the instructions are in the manual. I can scan them for you ing you need them.

DS is now 12kg 1yo and still fits comfortably in the Ventura car seat and I would recommend it to anyone asking.
